Meet Ms. Ruth

Ruth Murphy has just moved down to Savannah from Massachusetts, where she taught private and small group lessons for 13 years, and performed in bands in various communities in the area. Her piano students of all ages developed their skills and explored the world of music that means so much to them.

Her band students in grades 3 through 12 learned the basics of playing their chosen instrument (clarinet, saxophone, trumpet or flute), but they also learned about playing in a school band or a small ensemble. Ms. Murphy is looking forward to continued sharing of her love of music in Savannah.

Pulse Art Technology Festival Savannah PULSE Art + Technology Festival – January 21-25 2015 @ Telfair Museums in Savannah – celebrates inventive, interactive technology-based art

The annual festival invites visitors of all ages to see and learn for themselves how pioneering artists use progressive technology to create transformative electronic art. Open to the public. All PULSE events at Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center for the Arts are free of charge.

Pre-PULSE workshops run from January 16-18 and feature “how to’s” on making an electronic music toy and 3D Printing, along with a demonstration on interactive projection with guests offered the opportunity to try it themselves.

Workshops for youths and adults will provide introduction to technologies from the Oculus Rift virtual reality system to 3D printing, drones, and electronic music.

Guests of all ages can participate in a Free Family Day on Saturday, January 24 from 1-4 pm. Free Family Day will highlight “do-it-yourself” technology projects from the Savannah area.

PULSE offers offsite workshops and programs by local partners including Armstrong Atlantic State University. Workshop participants are able to take advantage of university-grade lab facilities that will enhance their PULSE experience.

Most PULSE programs are free thanks to the City of Savannah and Hargray Communications.

Utopia, Ga. in Savannah invites your kids to take part in this Winter Wonderland:  In December, Utopia will host a Winter Wonderland Retreat Girls’ Slumber party featuring princess dress-up, cookie decorating  & of course, the movie ‘Frozen.’

Affordable Savannah art classes for kids including Morning Mud for Toddlers, Felt Animals & more

Art classes for children in Savannah Parent and Child Holiday Clay, Soap Making Workshop, Morning Mud for toddlers, Felt Animals, Enameling, and Intro to Tiles.

Those are just a few of the fun art classes & workshops offered this Fall/Winter 2014 @ City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs studios at 9 W. Henry St.

Register now for day & evening sessions for children, teens, and adults in all skill levels.

Sessions begin October 27 and run through December 12. Three week and six week classes are available, as well as weekend workshops.

Visual arts class mediums include ceramics, glass, metalsmithing, and jewelry making. New workshops this session are Parent and Child Holiday Clay, Soap Making Workshop, Morning Mud for toddlers, Felt Animals, Enameling, and Intro to Tiles.

Class fees here. Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required. Credit cards are accepted.

Youth Workshops

Fused Glass Jewelry (2 weeks)
Instructor: Stephanie VanGeel
Ages 8+, Sat., Nov. 15 & 22, 10am-12pm
Join this fun hands-on class and learn how to layer glass to create jewelry. Students will create rings, necklaces and much more using a variety of techniques.
$55/$50 city resident

Raku
Instructor: Clair Buckner
All Ages, Sat., Nov. 22, 10-1pm
This ancient Japanese ceramic firing technique in which 2000° glowing red hot works are removed from the kiln and placed into a fire chamber filled with combustibles is sure to inflame and inspire. Personal bisque fired works can be glazed and fired. Pieces will be available for those who want to participate.
$10 per piece fired

Come join us for a holiday themed parent child workshop and make your own festive piece of art! Students will learn, basic hand building techniques and decorating techniques!

Fused Glass Ornaments
Instructor: Christine Hefner
Ages 8+, Sat., Dec. 6, 10-1pm
Join this hands-on workshop open to all skill levels interested in fused glass. Students will learn basic glass cutting and fusing techniques creating a unique fused glass ornaments.

Youth Visual Art Classes
Teen Jewelry (4 weeks)
Instructor: Jessica Duckworth
Ages 12+, Tues. Nov 18 – Dec. 9, 4:15-5:15pm
This introductory class will teach young students the fundamentals of jewelry design. Students will work with wire wrapping, beading and other techniques to create necklaces, bracelets and earrings.
$65/$60 city resident

Bookmaking (6 weeks)
Instructor: Johanna Hickey
Ages 8+, Wed. Oct. 29 – Dec. 10, 4 -5pm
In this beginning level class, students will explore traditional and alternative bookmaking methods. The class include, designing and creating their own covers as well as several ways of binding, from adhesive to non-adhesive techniques.
$85/$80 city resident

Children’s Clay (4 weeks)
Instructor: Clair Buckner
Ages 10-16, Wed. Oct. 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19, 3:30-4:30pm
This introductory clay class will teach young students the fundamentals of hand building and sculpture. Students will work with coils and slabs and a variety of glazes.
$65/$60 city resident

Morning Mud for Toddlers (3 weeks) – NEW
Instructor: Clair Buckner
Ages 3-6, Thurs. Oct. 30, Nov. 6, 13, 10-11am
This is a perfect pottery play date! This class will allow for a creative ceramic experience to be shared by children and their parents. The class will focus on coil and slab construction as well as different decorative techniques. Each week we will explore a new creative idea with clay.
$15/$10 city resident –per class

Felt Animals (6 weeks) – NEW
Instructor: Mary Bass
Ages 8+, Thurs., Oct. 30 – Dec. 11, 4-5pm
This class will teach children the basics of sewing and embroidery in a fun and creative way! Students will learn how to work from a drawing template to recreate one-of-a-kind animals out of felt!
$85/$80 city resident

Youth Drawing and Portfolio Prep:
A multi-level class designed to train the student to see and render drapery and still life arrangements accurately and with sensitivity. Working from direct observation, the fundamental principles are first mastered through drawing. An excellent class for those interested in developing a portfolio for school admission. Taught by Karen Bradley.

Bring your little ones out for some fun and education about the game of golf this Fall @ The Club at Savannah Harbor on Hutchinson Island.

PGA Class A Professional Paul Killgallon will lead this journey.

The dates are every Tuesday from 4:30-6 pm now through Dec. 9. (no clinic Nov. 25.)

HOLIDAY HAYRIDE: THE NOV. 17 CLINIC WILL END WITH A SPECIAL HAYRIDE THROUGH THE NEIGHBORING SAVANNAH HARBOR FOUNDATION’S FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS. No extra fee for this.  Not all clinics include the hayride.

Cost is $35 per clinic and includes snacks after each clinic.
