Matthew Reardon Center for Autism in Savannah

About The Matthew Reardon Center

MRCA was founded by native Savannahian Kim Reardon and is named for her son. In 1993 when he was in kindergarten, Matthew Reardon contracted viral encephalitis, which caused permanent brain injury and epilepsy. At that time, Savannah had did not have facilities to treat children with serious illness such as his. The Reardon family and friends donated money to Memorial Health University Medical Center, which made medical care for neurological impairment available locally. Through their experiences, the Reardons learned that children suffering from neurological disorders have many needs beyond those that are physical. It was from this realization that the Matthew Reardon Center was born. As the incidence of autism increased dramatically, The Center refocused its resources specifically on the unique needs of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism operates the only year-round, day school in southeast Georgia for children with ASD. Furthermore, it promotes outreach and advocacy through forged partnerships with existing medical, educational, and community services in order to help these children reach their full potential and enhance their quality of life as well as that of their families.

MRCA also serves the broader community and region through its Advocacy and Outreach programs, having provided services to citizens in more than 32 Georgia counties.

This year, MRCA will expand enrollment in its day school as well as aggressively augment its outreach and advocacy programs. The Matthew Reardon Center for Autism is funded in part by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, but relies heavily on the support of private individuals and organizations who share its passion and vision for children and families affected by autism.

Savannah May Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder

The May Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder offers a comprehensive set of educational and behavioral services to children and their families, private agencies, and public schools in the Savannah area. The Center also provides services to military families stationed at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.
Working closely with the families they serve, the May Center’s behavior specialists use developmentally appropriate practices based on applied behavior analysis (ABA), the methodology universally recognized as critical for teaching children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other behavioral or developmental disabilities. Their state-of-the-art programming addresses all areas of a child’s development including language, peer interactions, and behavior.

The Howard Center for Social Cognition and Communication

The Howard Center for Social Cognition and Communication provides Applied Behavior Analysis and Speech Therapy services for individuals ages 18 months to 22 years diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and related social learning challenges.

The Howard Center also provides training, consultation, and evaluation services for schools, agencies, and organizations.

Sarah Murphy, BCBA is an in-network provider for Tricare’s Comprehensive Autism Care Demonstration and is an approved ABA provider with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, Aetna Behavioral Health, and Optum/United Behavioral Health.

Effingham County Navigator Team (ECNT)

Effingham County Navigator Team is a nonprofit organization for children and adults with any disabilities.  ECNT includes support and recreational activities people with disabilities and all family members.

They are a parent led support group for parents and their special needs children and their siblings. They meet every second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at The Learning Treehouse located at 250 Goshen Rd in Rincon, GA .

Their goal is to provide children with disabilities of Effingham County and surrounding areas a better quality of life through community awareness, support, resources, training, and recreation.

The Lowcountry Autism Resource and Support Group
Meets monthly usually at 6:30 PM on the last Monday of each month at the Kicklighter Resource Center, located at 7215 Seawright Drive, Savannah. Kicklighter Academy , Savannah
Kicklighter Academy is an early education facility for children 6 weeks to 6 years with and without disabilities.  The school offers a year-round, full day program with curriculum starting at age 1.  The special needs programs are created and supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Education plans are strictly based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) methods. Kicklighter Academy also has a GA Lottery funded Pre-K program on site.

The majority of Kicklighter students are typically developing children that provide age appropriate models of play skills and social behavior for our children with disabilities in a classroom setting. All children benefit as they learn to value diversity. Kicklighter Academy is  at 7219 Seawright Dr., across from South Coast Medical Center on Eisenhower Dr.  912.355.7633.

The Kicklighter Resource Center is a local nonprofit organization that is dedicated to enhancing and enriching the lives of children and adults with autism, mental retardation and other developmental disabilities through effective programs, encouraging progressive legislation, community education, advocacy and support. Kicklighter operated several programs including the Kicklighter Academy, an early education facility for children 6 weeks to 6 years with and without disabilities; The Chatham Association of Residential Services (CARS) a housing program providing safe, affordable, hazard-free group homes or semi-independent apartments for adults with disabilities; a monthly respite program on the 2nd Saturday of each month which is free for children 12 and under with disabilities, and a community education program providing students and organization information about the needs and rights of these special people.
