From Macho to Mom: a military sergeant’s humorous handbook for surviving being a stay-at-home dad

Friday, August 15th, 2014

From Macho to Mom bookJ. Masters is a retired USAF Sgt. SERE Instructor. He spent over 20 years within the strict discipline of the military and he was good at it what he did, more than good really. He was an exceptional member of the United States Air Force. He thrived.

Then came retirement.

J. Masters tried out several professions after retiring from the military, but he never found anything that fit his personality so well as the SERE field. Then his wife, several years his junior, graduated and Masters decided that it was his turn to tackle homemaking and child-rearing full time while she became the bread-winner.

And tackle motherhood he did.

The results of his applying military principles to household life were at times ridiculous, at times fruitless, and, most times, comedic. Day after day, Masters discovered that there was something infinitely more challenging than performing pre-jump checklists and surviving enemy interrogation (no enemy interrogator is quite as effective as a child asking all the whys of the known universe)- housewifery (as he so aptly coined) was the most challenging role he’d ever played.

One day, Masters sat down at his computer- the house finally quiet with the older kids at school and the younger kids napping- and started typing (rambling really). Every day, he penned the hilarity and chaos of household maintenance.

From Macho2Mom, in all its randomness, will have you laughing, crying and truly appreciating the greatness of mothers all over the planet.

Children with disruptive behaviors and/or communication challenges can be much more difficult to parent.

Over time you may feel that your current parenting style has become less effective and feel unable to manage your child’s behavior. St. Andrew’s School teachers pick their favorite educational iPad apps for children

Best educational iPad games apps for children Savannah

Dr. Kelley Waldron, Lower School Head

St. Andrew’s School on Wilmington Island has many features that we love. One that really makes us swoon here at SouthernMamas.com is how cleverly the school incorporates technology into the classroom. Which is why it wasn’t surprising last school year when St. Andrew’s was named Apple Distinguished School for the 2012-13 academic year for its use of the iPad and Apple technology as tools to create a relevant and engaging school experience for its students.

The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for schools that excel in areas of innovation, leadership and educational excellence, and demonstrate Apple’s shared vision of exemplary learning environments.

St. Andrew’s has implemented iPad usage for all of its students, pre-K through 12th-grade.

As Dr. Kelley Waldron, Lower School Head, said:
“The iPad is never a replacement for best practices or seen as the curriculum- it is a tool in the classroom. The value of this tool is that it allows teachers to differentiate instruction by offering extra challenge to a student ready to move on, or reinforcement of a skill or concept for a student who needs the extra time to understand and master it. The best apps engage students in variety of learning modalities- asking them to solve problems, kinesthetically move letters or numbers, engage creatively with the content, and work in a self-paced fashion.”

So we asked St. Andrew’s teachers to share some of the top apps they love. Here are their picks:

BB Magic Apps – Teach basic phonics, right to left reading and spelling, blending and sight words

Endless Alphabet App– Educational and entertaining at the same time

Tally Tots App – A counting app that offers 20 different activities

St. Andrew’s is an independent International Baccalaureate World School committed to being a leader in 21st Century teaching and learning, which includes a curricular focus on creativity, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and character. For more information on the Pre-K 3 through Grade Twelve school, visit www.saintschool.com  or call 912.897.4941.

Savannah Magazine features a must-read article “How to Raise a Savannahian”

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

How to Raise a Safe SavannahianWe here at SouthernMamas always enjoy Savannah Magazine. Especially the May/June 2013 issue that features the article “How to Raise a Savannahian”

We particularly appreciate one break-out feature in the article (which unfortunately is not available online) entitled “How to Raise a Safe Savannahian”. It’s an interview with Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department’s Crime Prevention Office Cpl. John Simmons. Cpl. Simmons gives advice on a variety of parenting topics including:

1. Talk Tough About Guns: excerpt “…all parents need to sit down with their children and talk to them about gun safety. Explain what a weapon is and that it is not for show and tell – and it’s not to be touched without your supervision…”

2. Fight Crime with Caution: excerpt “The child should be conditioned to know that if the stranger keeps getting closer, he or she needs to turn and run away, find a safe place and call 911.”

3. Keep an eye on the Internet: excerpt “the Web is the number one threat to our children’s safety.”

4. Guard the cell phone: excerpt “Cool phone. May I see it?” That’s a question predators often ask potential victims, so the answer should always be no.”
