Picasso to Hockney: Modern Art on Stage Free Family Weekend at Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center, Savannah

Savannah and Chatham County residents are invited to visit the Jepson Center free of charge during this three-day weekend April 16-18 2021 to experience the exhibition Picasso to Hockney: Modern Art On Stage.

From 10AM- 5PM Friday through Sunday, the museum will offer free admission to the large contemporary art space on Telfair Square, in partnership with the City of Savannah. Face masks are required, and occupancy limits will be enforced for social distancing.

Take a scavenger hunt based on the exhibition and pick up a free art-making kit for families to enjoy at home. Theater arts and fashion displays by local students will be featured each afternoon.

Visitors to the Free Family Weekend are invited to tour current exhibitions—including the special exhibition Picasso to Hockney: Modern Art on Stage, a partnership with the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio—and explore art activities created by Telfair’s education team, including a limited number of free take-home art kits for children.

Other exhibitions currently on view include Vehicles of Change; Complex Uncertainties: Artists in Postwar America; David Gumbs: From Dust to Gold; and Youthful Adventures: Growing Up in Photography, which closes after Sunday.

Jump into the exciting world of performing arts through the world of Oz! Ease on down the yellow brick road – acting, dancing, and creating – alongside the colorful characters and storylines of the wonderful Wizard and friends. Georgia State Railroad Museum is a large, open-air historic site with plenty of space for safe social distancing. Staff and volunteers handing out treats will be positioned throughout the outdoor museum. Blacksmith demonstrations by Coastal Heritage Society will occur throughout the day as well as a special egg wood turning demonstration by Lowcountry Turners.

Cost to attend Eggstravaganza: $5 per person for all participants, ages 18 months and older.

Coastal Heritage Society in Savannah will host Family Day on Sat. March 13 2021 at all six of its museums including Savannah Children’s Museum, Georgia State Railroad Museum & Old Fort Jackson. Guests can enjoy interactive exhibits and engaging tours at each site through family-friendly, immersive activities that illustrate the narratives of Savannah’s past.

Georgia State Railroad Museum will have blacksmithing demonstrations throughout the day and will once again welcome visitors to take a Site Tour by Train.

SCAD’s deFINEART festival 2021  Feb. 23-25.

You’re invited to SCAD’s deFINEART festival featuring virtual programming tied to the exhibitions that are now on view at SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah.

Of the exhibitions on view, families may particularly enjoy The Haas Brothers ‘Beast in Show’ (pictured).

In Beast in Show, the twin brothers Nikolai and Simon Haas Brothers present recent “beast” sculptures ranging in scale from the hand-held to the larger-than-life. These fantastical creatures are an ongoing body of work. Composed of natural fur from a variety of animals paired with cast bronze or carved wood, the beasts typically only possess legs and horns, leaving viewers to infer personality from gesture and form rather than facial features. With titles like Snail Earnhardt Jr. and Shaggy Gyllenhaal, the beasts are charming, odd, whimsical, and humorous, reflective of the artists’ spirited approach to art making.

Virtual Youth Theater Classes with the Savannah Cultural Arts Center 

The Savannah Cultural Arts Center is debuting Virtual Arts Classes including two youth theater offerings: Drama Adventures with Dr. Seuss (Ages 5 to 8) and Virtual Theater Makers (Ages 9 to 12). These six-week, virtual sessions will present engaging content focused on interaction, collaboration, and movement.

Out of the Box; Virtual Theatre Makers

Using a unique blend of Zoom-friendly improv and playwriting activities, young actors will explore new ways to create theatre from the ground up. Over seven weeks, creative minds will be stretched and traditional limitations of live performance will be broken, as participants work to develop original scenes, monologues, and characters, culminating in a final virtual showcase for friends and family.

This class is intended for 9 to 12-year-olds with any level of experience.

This 6-week virtual class series invites participants ages 5 to 8 to fully immerse themselves in the imaginary world of Dr. Seuss by way of acting, music, craft, and dance activities. Appropriate for all experience levels, each class will feature a new creative adventure and encourages young performers of any ability to build confidence and express themselves on stage and on the Zoom screen.
