Portfolio Builder: Youth Drawing: Session 1

Ages: 10-14

This class is designed to help upper-elementary and middle school students improve their drawing skills and begin the process of developing a portfolio. In Drawing I, students will focus on measurement, proportion, and perspective, with some practice portraiture and sketching from clothed models. Youth Drawing is a great class for students to develop their art portfolios. New students welcome. All materials will be provided.

Video Game Development

In this five week class students will build their own video game. Students will explore, play, and develop video games while learning computer programming from scratch using Game Maker. Toddler Tuesday Program Fees for 2016:
General: $5 per child $5 per adult
Friends of Oatland Members: $5 per child, up to 2 adults FREE!

Program fee includes program and entrance to Oatland Island Wildlife Center and trails.

If you are new to the Savannah area or are a new parent, then you need to check out Toddler Tuesdays, a fun weekly program that celebrates nature @ Oatland Island Wildlife Center, 711 Sandtown Rd. Savannah, GA, 31410.

At Toddler Tuesday, children & their parents/caretakers experience nature through themed activities including live animal encounters, wildlife nature walks, storytelling, songs, interactive finger-play & crafts.

Oatland’s naturalist Michelle Kelly leads these exciting & educational sessions.

UPCOMING TODDLER TUESDAY THEMES

May 10                 Bee Sweet—It will bee a sweet day of learning at Oatland. This theme is all about the honey bee:  What they do for us, and how they work as a super family. We’ll make a craft and you can then make a bee line straight over to the hives and see our girls at work!

May 17                 That Awesome Opossum—It is marsupial magic day at Oatland.  Crawl out of your pouch and head over to Oatland for this fun-filled fuzzy animal encounter.

May 24                 World Turtle Day– We will explore all types of turtles, from box to snappers to sea turtles.  We will   learn about this ancient reptile.  So, come don’t hide in your shell, get over to Oatland for this Toddler Tuesday theme.  It is World Turtle Day after all!

May 31                 She Sells Seashells—With summer just around the corner and the beach beckoning you we will explore the world of sea shells and find out what these animals are and what they are up to…or should I say down to.

This year, St. Peter the Apostle School in Savannah, Georgia, celebrates their 35th year on their Wilmington Island Campus.

The beautiful 10-acre campus includes a Lower School, Middle School, two gymnasiums, football field, practice field, and a state-of-the-art playground.

Deadline for Savannah-Chatham Public Specialty Schools is Feb. 1

Interested in enrolling your child in one of the various Savannah-Chatham Public School specialty programs including kindergartens for 2016-17?

Online application is available now & the application window closes Feb. 1 2016. (These public schools such as Garrison Elementary, J.G. Smith Elementary, Charles Ellis Montessori Academy etc. either don’t have an attendance zone/neighborhood district or they also accept children outside of their attendance zone/neighborhood district).

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System offers 23 Specialty Programs throughout the district to provide students with a diverse portfolio of educational options.

Free, state-funded Pre-K

The Pre-K Lottery for Savannah-Chatham public schools is different than the Specialty Program application process & will be at a later date.  

Pre-K applications for the free, lottery-funded Pre-K programs for 2016-17 at Savannah-Chatham County public schools will be available starting Feb. 23 2016. Applications are due March 8 2016. The lottery will be April 5 2016.

This free, state-funded Pre-K is open to all children who are 4 years old on or by Sept. 1. Details here. 

FREE nature program for ages 3-4 @ Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

free preschooler program at Savannah National Wildlife Refuge The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge now hosts a “Young Explorers Club” on the first Tuesday of each month.

The free, hour-long monthly program for 3-4 year-olds. It starts at 10AM on the first Tuesday of each month. There will be story time, crafts, snacks, and take-home activities all about each month’s topic.

The programs will on the first Tuesday of every month at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center (694 Beech Hill Lane Hardeeville, SC 29927).

Each month, a different animal or method of conservation will be highlighted. Juniors of Girl Scout Troop 30387 have designed the monthly programs as their service project for completing the Bronze Award. The themes are:
February – Lady Bugs
March – Plants
April – Recycle
May – Baby Birds
June – Alligators
July – Sea Turtles
