Keys to Success: Ms Amy’s School of Music in Savannah

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Ms. Amy School of Music has a new Web site that clearly states the variety of children’s music lessons and parent-and-me music classes she offers. Check it out here.

Register before March 1, 2011 for one of Ms. Amy’s School of Music’s early childhood music education classes and you will receive one free class and only pay $50 for the 6-week term! Mention SouthernMamas to receive the deal. Start date is March 2 for Wednesday morning classes and March 5 for Saturday morning classes. Click here for more info.

Ms. Amy’s School of Music is a hit with kids. After taking Ms. Amy’s toddler class, my 2-year-old now loves to pretend she IS Ms. Amy. This game usually involves strumming a play banjo (and pretending it’s Ms. Amy’s guitar), tapping her foot and singing one of the many kiddie-hits Ms. Amy sings in class. Then she starts talking about how she wants to see Ms. Amy again.

For class descriptions, click here. Contact Ms. Amy’s School of Music in Savannah via email at msamyschoolofmusic@gmail.com with any questions. Payment is accepted for the term at the first class. Classes are held at 2421 Waters Ave. near Daffin Park. For a schedule of available class times, visit www.msamyschoolofmusic.com.

Need new lullabies? Check out Putumayo Kids “Acoustic Dreamland” CD

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

putumayo-kids-acoustic-dreamlandLet’s face it. We only have a handful of years to sing our kids lullabies before they’re putting themselves to sleep. So now’s the time to make sure we sing them the best lullabies we can find.

The Allman Brothers “Blue Sky” is the newest lullaby my kids and I are crooning around the house these days at nap and bedtime. It’s the perfect lullaby to chase away the winter blues.

Credit the new Putumayo Kids CD “Acoustic Dreamland” for putting that tantalizing tune – and so many others – on the tip of our tongue.

The CD – set to be released Feb. 22 – features 11 singer-songwriters (including Elizabeth Mitchell singing the Allman Brothers’ “Blue Sky”) performing unplugged, soothing music to help the wee ones unwind. The CD begins with Lucy Kaplansky performing a rendition Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “Dreamland.” Now if this isn’t the ideal lullaby to end the day and savor our little ones’ childhoods, we don’t know what is.

“Every sleepy boy and girl in every bed around the world
Can hear the stars up in the sky whispering a lullaby
Who knows where you’ll fly away winging past the light of day
The man in the moon and the Milky Way welcome you to dreamland.”

Disclosure: We received the CD at no cost for this review.

Jepson ArtZeum picks: Fun children’s art books for young artists

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

art-books-childrenArtZeum at Telfair Museum’s Jepson Center for the Arts –  the two-level, hands-on children’s section – has some new and interesting additions to the small collection of children’s books on art in the back corner of the second level.

The books are certain to spark children’s excitement about creating their own artwork as well as learning about the styles of the great masters. Here are a few that we checked out from our local library and liked. Thanks, Jepson, for the suggestions!

“A Child’s Book of Play in Art” by Lucy Micklethwait – This book encourages children to look at paintings, explore them and find in them familiar and unfamiliar things. The collection of pictures aims to inspire a range of activities.

“Children’s Book of Art: An introduction to the world’s most amazing paintings and sculptures

“Discovering Great Artists” by MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga – This book offers fun hands-on art projects to teach children about the styles of the great masters. Example: to teach kids how Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel, a lie-down painting project involves taping paper to the underside of a table and having your child lie on their back and paint the “ceiling.”

I Spy Shapes in Art,” by Lucy Micklethwait
“I Spy A Lion, Animals in Art,” by Lucy Micklethwait
I Spy Colors in Art,” by Lucy Micklethwait

“Me and Uncle Romie” by Claire Hartfield (inspired by the art of Romare Bearden)
“Emily’s Art” by Peter Catalanotto
“Lily Brown’s Paintings” by Angela Johnson
“Willow” by Denise Brennan-Nelson and Rosemarie Brennan

Other art books (that aren’t in the ArtZeum collection that we know of) which teach even toddlers to recognize the masterpieces are those in the Touch the Art series by Julie Appel and Amy Guglielmo including:
Brush Mona Lisa’s Hair
Make Van Gogh’s Bed
Feed Matisse’s Fish
Catch Picasso’s Rooster
Pop Warhol’s Top
Tickle Tut’s Toes
Count Monet’s Lilies

ArtZeum at Telfair Museum’s Jepson Center for the Arts, 207 W. York St. Savannah, 912.790.8800, www.telfair.org

Take your kids on a Tybee Beach Ecology Trip led by a marine biologist

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

tybee-beach-activities-kidsAdd this to your list of fun and educational things-to-do with kids in the Savannah area: Take a Tybee Island Beach Ecology Trip led by marine scientist/biologist Dr. Joe Richardson.

A trip to the beach isn’t complete without your kids asking you a barrage of questions about the shells, tides and animals. Wouldn’t it be ideal to have a marine biologist along to give them some answers and make your next beach trip a valuable experience discovering and learning? Take one of Dr. Joe’s beach ecology trips. School groups from South Carolina, Georgia and Florida regularly ask Dr. Joe to lead their Tybee Island beach trips. Read a list of activities and topics the beach ecology walk covers by clicking here.

There are still some available dates and times between now and mid-summer, but contact Joe soon as he is already booking many family, scout, school and tour group trips for the next few months. Call (912) 596-5362 or email  joe@ceasurf.com to set up a beach walk.

Savannah baby photographer launches newborn site; offers SouthernMamas readers $100 print credit

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

savannah-newborn-photographer-nicole-2There is no doubt beloved Savannah baby and child photographer Nicole Williams adores babies. That’s clearly evident by just taking one glance at her adorable photos.

When Nicole  started  Memories for Keepsake, Photography by Nicole  three years ago, she never of dreamed her newborn work would take off in the direction it has, allowing Nicole to serve not only Savannah moms, but also nationwide. Nicole had clients from Atlanta, South Carolina, Tennesse, Virginia, Florida and North Carolina to have their portraits done.

“It’s so humbling to see clients truly value their portraiture enough to drive several hours and stay the night in a hotel weeks or even days after the birth of their baby for newborn portraiture,” says Nicole.

savannah-newborn-photographer-nicole-1Nicole Williams just launched a new sister site off the original Memories for Keepsake portraiture site that is dedicated to JUST newborns. Access the newborn site by visiting www.memoriesforkeepsake.com  then clicking on “newborn site” OR just visit www.nicolewilliamsbaby.com . Nicole has exciting things planned this year that will take newborn portraiture to a whole new level for Savannah. She needs a few models for these sessions. If you are interested in being a model, send Nicole an email with your name, email address and phone number and she’ll contact you with that information.

To top it all off, Nicole is offering a $100 print credit to SouthernMamas readers if you book and reserve your newborn session before May 1, 2011.
