Help Savannah-area foster children

Help foster children foster parents Savannah Georgia

There’s a huge need for foster homes in the Savannah area. There are ways you can help – whether it’s taking the huge step and becoming trained to become a foster parent or simply by volunteering to help support foster kids in our area.

Here are some resources to help foster kids:

Lutheran Services of Georgia

Lutheran Services of Georgia is one of the largest non-profit providers of specialized foster care services in Georgia. Lutheran Services of Georgia works in partnership with the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) to ensure the safety, permanency, and well-being of children. LSG provides Specialized Foster Care services for children in the custody of the DFCS and the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Specialized Foster Care Services are offered in Savannah among other Georgian cities.

Learn about becoming a foster parent & upcoming trainings here.

Georgia MENTOR

Georgia MENTOR is an agency that partners with the Department of Family and Children Services to place foster children with emotional, behavioral or medical challenges in care.
Georgia MENTOR also provides training and support to foster parents to care for children who have been through many difficult challenges. That’s in addition to what foster parents receive from DFACS.
The Georgia MENTOR program in Savannah, which serves several counties in the surrounding area, has a huge need for therapeutic foster homes.
CONTACT: Complete a foster application with Georgia MENTOR online at makeadifferenceathome.com or call 912-234-6853.

Volunteer or donate to help foster children in the Savannah area

Savannah/Chatham County CASA program

Savannah/Chatham County’s nonprofit CASA program, part of a national program which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates, is in need of more volunteers to represent the best interests of abused or neglected children in the court system.

CASA trains volunteers to serve as the eyes and ears of judges in child abuse and neglect cases. A newly trained volunteer is appointed one case at first to research in depth. This involves talking to the children, relatives, teachers and others, attending court hearings, completing court reports and more. The volunteer then reports back to the judge with information gathered about what would be in the best interest of the child.

Abused or neglected children in the court system who have a CASA volunteer are more likely to find a safe, permanent home, more likely to get more help while in the system, and more likely to do better in school.

CONTACT: Donations to the Savannah/Chatham program are accepted online. Volunteer applications are also available online. Find out about both here.

For more information, contact Samantha Oughtred, one of four advocacy coordinators at Savannah/Chatham County CASA Inc: samantha@savannahcasa.org or 912-663-9728

Savannah mom raising money to directly help Puerto Rico

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

help puerto rico savannah

We love what Savannah mom of three Carmen Vazquez is doing to help her island of Puerto Rico.

Carmen has teamed with Keller Williams Realty Coastal Area Partners in Savannah to provide a way to directly help Puerto Rico, where nearly 90 percent of the island is still without power  three weeks after Hurricane Maria made landfall there.

You can help, too, by donating to Puerto Rico Youth at Risk, Inc., PRYAR (Jóvenes de Puerto Rico en Riesgo, Inc.),  a private non-profit organization that has worked in PR since 1996, designing and implementing programs geared to youth at risk. Carmen’s been involved with PRYAR since its inception in 1996.

100% of all donated funds will go to PRYAR. That means your money will not go towards overhead, administration and red tape, but will directly help support people in PR who are dealing with losses.

Donate via GoFundMe here. You will receive a receipt for tax purposes.

Here’s the PRYAR action plan to concentrate on relief efforts to all residents of the communities they serve. Most of these communities concentrate around where the eye made landfall. Each school served by their programs has a tutoring center managed by PRYAR. These centers will become their operation center for each community.

•They will offer services in the communities instead of expecting residents to move to San Juan to access services.

•Most of these schools are currently used as refugee centers for people who have lost their homes.  They will open their doors to all of them and become an extra resource for the mayor of those municipalities in supporting them to access FEMA services and governmental support.

•They will visit and access all 359 families they currently serve to determine the needs for each family and youth.  They will offer psychological services to these families.

•They will create support groups at each school through their licensed staff to help residents cope with loss, learn resiliency and healthy recovery, deal with this crisis and help them manage the emotional effects of this event in an empowering way.

•They will recruit their Youth Leadership Program (Orden del Manicato) to help with cleanup efforts and be available for community support in rebuilding.  As power and internet are restored to each center, they will be available for residents to have access to computer services.

•As schools start providing educational services again the organization and its tutors will be available to serve the Department of Education as needed in the process of reintegrating the students and catching up with loss of instructional time. .

Donate via GoFundMe here. You will receive a receipt for tax purposes.

Last year’s event welcomed over 5,000 participants and this year LDSS is hoping to have even more community members come out and raise awareness and funds for local programs that benefit people with Down syndrome and their families.

The Buddy Walk Program encourages participants of all ages and abilities. Carriages, strollers, wheelchairs, little red wagons and pets are all welcome. The goals are to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome and to positively influence local and national policy and practice. Past Buddy Walk events have raised millions to benefit education, research, and advocacy initiatives nationally, as well as the Night of Champions, Camp Buddy and many other services here in the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire.

Family Fun Festival

The walk begins at 10AM with a Family Fun Festival being held immediately thereafter. A wide range of activities including face painting, bouncy houses, other games, as well as music and refreshments will last until 2pm.

Register for the Buddy Walk

Online registration is available here. Participants can also signup starting at 8:30 am the day of the event. Registration is $15 per person or $50 for a family of four, which includes a T-Shirt, lunch & admission to the festival. What Is It?

The Annual Thrift Sale, is one of the largest of its kind in the South East. Each year people come from all over the Low Country to shop for treasures and bargains. The Sale, held each fall, is a primary source of funding for the Junior League. All of the proceeds from the sale are returned to the community through Junior League community improvement projects as well as developing the leadership of the Junior League members. The sale also provides the community with a low-cost option to purchase needed household goods.

All of the net proceeds go directly into the community through a combination of League-sponsored volunteer projects, community grants, and development of leadership skills of our members.
