Preventing head lice: possible or just a Fairy Tale?

Saturday, July 21st, 2012

Chances are if your child isn’t school-age yet, you probably don’t think of head lice as a concern. But after your children start school, you may just have your first experience with the disgusting yet incredibly common affliction.

An estimated 12 million cases of head lice are diagnosed in the United States each year. While health experts stress that lice is harmless, it’s certainly a huge nuisance with a serious ick factor.

So is there anything you can do to prevent your child from getting lice – especially if you’re sending them off to summer camp or preparing for back -to-school? The verdict is still out on that, but there are some possible lice-prevention products on the market.

Tea tree oil shampoo – available in drug/grocery stores –  reportedly repels lice.

Also, Fairy Tales Hair Care makes Rosemary Repel preventative shampoo and other hair products that contain natural ingredients that lice reportedly don’t like.

Fairy Tales Hair Care even has an iPhone app, called Facts of Lice, that notifies you of any lice outbreaks in your area and tells you how to treat and prevent head lice.

Read more about this mom’s attempt to prevent my kids from getting lice in my newspaper column here.

A love letter to Whole Foods, Savannah

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

Below is today’s Savannah Morning News column:

Dear Whole Foods,

Word on the street is you, a multinational “supernatural” grocer, are considering opening a store in Savannah.

I am not sure I am strong enough to handle it.

Especially since the proposed location — in the old pink Backus Cadillac site on Victory Drive — is just an organic pomegranate seed throw from my house and a spot I drive by regularly. As a faithful Kroger-card holder (who can pass up those gas-discount points in this economy?), if you move into town, I’d be tempted to “cheat” multiple times a day by your endless rows and endless abundance of alluringly displayed, healthy, sustainably-raised food.

The developers won’t name the grocery store eyeing the site, but all indications are that it will be you, the Austin-based market that’s been dubbed America’s healthiest grocery store. Foodies and arugula-o-philes call you mecca. People like me who love you but are on a Family Dollar budget, call you Whole Paycheck.

I’ve been to Whole Foods in other cities. This is what happens when I enter your wonderfully haute-crunchy stores….

Kids LiveWell: How to eat out with kids in restaurants in a healthy way

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Restaurant food is generally served in large portions and typically high in calories, sodium & fat, contributing to childhood obesity.

We’re all looking for tools to help make smarter dining out choices for our children. The National Restaurant Association launched Kids LiveWell, a website providing nutritional information for healthier meal options for restaurant dining.

You’re invited to a Twitter party hosted by @resourcefulmom this Thurs. Feb. 9 from 2-3 PM to celebrate the growth of Kids LiveWell. A registered dietitian will answer participants’ questions about eating well on-the-go, and will share info about new restaurant partners, and the mobile site.

Twitter party attendees using the hashtag #kidslivewell are eligible to win gift cards from participating restaurants such as Outback Steakhouse, Au Bon Pain, and IHop.

A Whole Foods Market coming to Savannah?

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

The pink Backus site at Victory Drive & Truman Parkway in Midtown Savannah will be undergoing renovations. We hope the high-end grocery store that is supposed to be housed in the former Cadillac dealership spot will be Whole Foods, as rumored.

The prospective buyers of the Backus property, Atlanta-area development firms Knightwood and S.J. Collins Enterprises, plan to convert the Victory Drive frontage to parking and construct three new buildings to house retail on the site.

The Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission approved the redevelopment plan last week. The largest building planned for the site will measure 35,000 square feet. The developers have been in negotiations with a “high-end retail grocer” to lease the spot.

Word on the street that high-end grocer is Whole Foods. Keep those fingers crossed. Stay tuned here for updates.

Savannah lactation consultant provides breastfeeding support for home and work

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Too often breastfeeding turns out to be the surprise challenge for new moms.

Nursing is easier with support and supplies from Savannah-area lactation consultant Pamela Holland of Babies, Breastfeeding and Beyond LLC.

Call for an initial in-home consult to help with any problems you may be experiencing with your baby or for a pre-natal visit for breastfeeding concerns before your baby is born.

Breastfeeding, even including the price of consultation is a more affordable and healthier alternative to formula. Formula costs at least $1,650 per year, more than ten times the cost of one consultation.

As a board-certified Lactation Consultant who has worked with moms and babies of Southeast Georgia in the public  health sector for the past 20 years, Pamela Holland can help you feel confident in your ability to learn how to nurture and feed your baby.

Pamela Holland started her private practice because she felt that women were being too hard on themselves when they did not achieve the kind of breastfeeding success that “the books” recommended.  Breastfeeding is a natural process, but it may not always be easy.  Rather than take a cookie cutter approach, Pamela Holland believes each mom and baby are unique and must have a personal plan of care that is customized to meet their specific needs. After all, Caesarean delivery, multiple births, and proximity of extended family are just a few of the challenges that are typical in today’s newborn delivery.

If you are having any issues with breastfeeding or have had a previous experience that was less than you had hoped for,  call Babies, Breastfeeding and Beyond at 912-306-4619.

Glass Is Always Greener: Drink From An Ecofriendly BottlesUp Glass Water Bottle

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

On this Earth Day 2011, SouthernMamas.com is raising our reusable, eco-friendly glass BottlesUp water bottle in a toast to Kim Smith Rowe!

Kim won this week’s SouthernMamas.com giveaway:   a BottlesUp glass water bottle with the lowest carbon footprint in the industry. Cheers Kim!

Thanks to everyone who entered to win by sharing your Earth Day resolutions on the BottlesUp Facebook page .

What better time than Earth Day to ditch your landfill-bound plastic bottle and opt for a sustainable, recycled BottlesUp? Bluffton-based Bottles Up founder and a nationally-acclaimed glass artist Laurel Herter kindly mailed SouthernMamas.com our own BottlesUp for review and we love it.

The sleek 22-ounce vessel is made with recycled glass and the snap-on cap is from food grade silicone – all sourced and made in North America. You have a choice of four different colors of caps and matching silicone grip rings. We especially appreciate the retro milk bottle lip.

Not only does the glass bottle help you in your goal to stop being environmentally reckless, it also will help you save money by refilling at the tap.

But our favorite aspect of BottlesUp? Glass means that outside materials such as BPA won’t creep into our water. Now that’s something to toast to on Earth Day. Cheers!

Baby yoga clothing and classes available at Savannah Yoga Center

Friday, August 6th, 2010

baby-yoga-set-11baby-yoga-gagaYou’ve been so busy teaching her to walk and talk, it never entered your mind to show her how to relax and breathe.

Now’s your chance.

Savannah Yoga Center not only offers mommy-and-infant and mommy-and-toddlers yoga classes, the Bull Street yoga center and boutique also now carries Quite Contrary Baby, a new line of yoga inspired clothing for babies that inspire. The baby yoga clothing includes sets like the one pictured: an organic cotton onesie or tee and 100 percent cotton coordinating pants with screen printed original graphics.

SYC’s Mommy-and-me baby yoga classes help itsy-bitsy yogis learn breathing techniques that promote healthy digestion, wellness, and even sleep regulation.

savannah-yogaClasses also provide a golden opportunity for mothers and their babies to bond and to receive both physical and spiritual nurturing from practicing yoga and of course, having fun together! Classes are relaxed and informal, with stories and songs as well as yoga. Look for a schedule of SYC’s baby yoga classes in next week’s SouthernMamas e-letter or click here.

So you’ll have a little breathing room of your own.

Available at Savannah Yoga Center, 1319 Bull St. Boutique hours are 10 AM-2 PM Mondays – Fridays and also open before and after all yoga classes. (912) 232-2994 or email: kelley (at) savannahyoga (dot) com, www.savannahyoga.com
