Tunnel to Towers 5K Run Savannah to Honor 9/11 Firefighters on Sept. 15

Saturday, August 4th, 2012

Savannah doesn’t have the tunnels of NYC. But we certainly have the compassion and gratitude for the heros of 9/11.

Which is why it’s exciting to learn that Savannah will have our first Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run on Sat. Sept. 15, 2012 in memory of New York City firefighter Stephen Siller and 343 FDNY brothers who sacrificed their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

The inaugural 5K run begins 8 AM Sept. 15 at Orleans Square at Barnard and McDonough streets in the Savannah Historic District. Registration for the Tunnel to Towers Run Savannah is available online at www.t2trun.org , www.fleetfeetsavannah.com/t2t  or in person at Fleet Feet Sports Savannah at 3405 Waters Ave. in Savannah. The run is sponsored by Wells Fargo Advisors.

When Stephen Siller got off his shift at Squad 1 in Park Slope, Brooklyn on September 11, 2001, news of the first plane hitting one of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center echoed from his radio scanner. As he approached the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, it was already closed to traffic. He strapped 75 pounds of gear to his back and sprinted straight through the tunnel and into the World Trade Center.

The Tunnel to Towers Run originally began in New York City 2002, retracing Stephen’s final footsteps, and has now extended nationwide in honor of those who died on 9/11.

Proceeds from the Tunnel to Towers Run Savannah go to “Building for America’s Bravest” through the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. These funds will be designated to building “Smart Homes” for two severely wounded Georgia veterans: SFC Mike Schlitz, U.S. Army in Columbus, Ga., and Cpl. Todd Love, USMC in Atlanta, Ga.

For sponsorship info, contact Jane Grismer at 912.313.4806 or t2tsav@gmail.com .

Save Savannah’s Rails to Trails

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

Savannah’s Rails to Trails  – a 6 mile biking/walking/jogging trail along the Savannah River – is eroding. The west end is so bad that it is almost impassable in some areas.

If you want this trail to be there in the future for your kids to enjoy, please like Save our Rails to Trails Savannah Facebook page here to find out how you can help. The mission of Save our Rails to Trails Savannah Facebook pg is to bring awareness to the deteriorating conditions of Rails to Trails & get it restored.

Rails to Trails is along Hwy 80 East on your way to Tybee. The main entrance is just past the Bull River Bridge coming off the islands (Whitemarsh, Talahi & Wilmington). Rails To Trails is known on maps as “McQueen’s Trail” & “McQueen’s Island”. The other entrance is immediately left upon turning into Fort Pulaski.

Volunteers working to save Rails to Trails plan to have workdays once a month. Stay updated about the clean-ups & other ways to help (fundraising, etc) by liking their page here.

Summer Workout Tips: All you need is a kitchen chair

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

Below is a guest post from Susan O’Neill Certified Person Trainer Owner/Instructor SouthPark Boot Camp , Charlotte, NC

Having a hard time getting your workouts in with the kids home and going on vacation?   Here is a full body workout (legs, arms, glutes, core and more) that only requires a kitchen chair (or a coffee table, bench or tree stump – no excuses!).  Place the chair with the back against a wall to prevent slipping. You can use a watch for your timer or the smartphone app, Gymboss works great!

In each exercise, make sure your core is strong, bellybutton pulling in towards your spine (very important for lower back safety).  The exercises are grouped in 3 sets with 5 exercises in each.  Complete a set, recover with some water and move on to the next set.  Go through at least 2 times if your schedule allows!

1.  Rainbow:  Stand in front of the chair, begin with right toe pointing to the right side of the chair, using abs and squeezing the glutes in your left leg, lift the right leg over the chair, tap toe down on the left side then back to start.  Repeat for 30 seconds then switch legs.

2.  Tricep dips with crunch:  Sit on the edge of your chair with your hands under your bum, knuckles up, fingers over the front edge of chair, legs straight out.  As you lower (dip) your body down, crunch one knee in to chest, contracting abs.  Alternate knees in, keep elbows close to ribs and bum very close to chair.  Lift, lower and crunch for 45 seconds.   Modify this move by bringing your feet closer to the chair or leaving out the crunch.

3.  Plies:  Turn chair around so you can use the back for balance.  Start in 2nd position (feet wide, turned out at 45 degree angle, drop into a low squat, lift heels, abs in tight.  SQUEEZING glutes, lift and lower for 45 seconds, after 45 seconds, hold in low squat, heels still raised, pulse knees back for another 30 seconds.  To modify, shake legs out as needed, then come back to it.

4.  Captain’s Chair:  Sit in your chair, hands on the sides, palms down and fingers wrapped around side.  Pull belly button in to meet the spine, squeeze thighs together, lift bum off the seat with arms, lifting knees to chest as you come up. Hold for ten counts, release and repeat 5 times.  Modify by keeping one foot lightly on ground and you pull other knee in towards chest.  Keep bellybutton in tight!

5.  Side Plank with lower leg lift:  Begin by lying down on right side, left foot on the seat of the chair, body extended in side plank position, tailbone tucked under, lift body up onto elbow and the side of your left foot.  Hips off the ground.  Lift and lower the right leg, tapping the underside of the chair.  45 seconds then switch sides.

1.  Split Lunges: (aka Bulgarian Lunges) Stand in front of chair, your back to the seat.  Place the toes of your left foot on top of chair, hop the right leg out so when you lower yourself into a lunge so your knee does not come past your toes of the standing leg.  Keeping the weight in the heel of your standing leg, bend that standing leg, lowering your body until thigh is parallel with ground, chest stays up, then press up through your heel, squeezing your bum.  45 seconds on each leg.

2.  Pushups w/ leg lift:  Place your hands on the front of the chair, walk feet out to a plank position, lift one leg straight as you lower yourself down, return leg to floor as you straighten your arms, alternate legs on each pushup.   Modify by performing pushup without leg lift, or hold plank and perform leg lifts without pushup.  45 seconds.

3.  Hip lifts:  lie down in front of the chair, place heels on the seat of your chair.  Thighs and hips are at a 90 degree angle and calves and hamstrings are, too.  With all your weight in your heels and shoulder blades, lift hips and squeeze glutes.  Lift and lower quickly for 45 seconds, then hold in an up position and pulse and squeeze for 30 more seconds.

4.  V-sit:  Sit with bottom on edge of chair, spine straight, leaning back, bellybutton in, lift knees so body is in a V.  Extend legs, then pull back to V.  Arms are out straight for balance, or to modify, hands on the edge of chair.  V position can be held for a modification.  45 seconds.

5.  Spiderman Pushups:  Begin in the incline pushup position from the arms exercise.  As you lower your body, bring right knee out to right elbow, replace to starting position as you straighten arms, then left knee in on the next pushup, alternate for 45 seconds.

1.  One leg squats:  Stand in front of the chair as if you were about to have a seat.   Hold one left foot up in the air, slowly lower yourself into the chair, barely let your bum touch, pulling in thru your bellybutton, power that standing leg to lift you back to starting position.  To modify this, use the leg that is up as a kick stand, letting your heel touch down as needed until you get strong enough to do it fully on one leg.  30 seconds on each side.

2.  Decline pushups:  Place feet on the seat of the chair, walk hands out to perform pushups with belly button pulled in tight.  Modify by holding plank without the pushup.  If you have lower back problems, perform regular pushups on the ground or with hands on chair.  45 seconds.

3.  One leg hip lifts:  Same set up as the hip lifts, but point one toe straight up in the air and lift hips.  45 seconds on each leg.

4.  Decline Cougar:  Feet on chair like in the decline pushup position, tailbone under, contracting abs, bring knee into chest, alternate legs for 45 seconds.

5.  Decline Plank leg lifts:  Begin in the decline pushup position, bellybutton in tight, lift right leg straight up, squeeze glutes and do not let hips tilt.  Repeat for 30 seconds then switch legs without coming down! Modification, hold decline plank or plank on the floor without leg lifts.

Crossfit Kids Health & Fitness Classes in Savannah (10% discount for SouthernMamas.com readers)

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Crossfit Hyperformance wants to help you provide your kids with a life of Wellness. Their Crossfit Kids program is designed to create a lifelong love of Health and Fitness.

Crossfit Kids Pairs Fitness with FUN! Crossfit believes kids should be exposed to potent, effective, and functional movement with appropriate coaching and cueing. However, Crossfit’s ultimate goal is linking fitness with fun.

February Focus: THE DEADLIFT!!

Each month,  Crossfit Kids focuses on a different skill or movement. During the duration of February,  Crossfit Kids will focus on the safe and proper technique of the Deadlift!! The deadlift is a functional movement. This means the deadlift is the proper and safe way to pick up any object in the gym and throughout everyday life!

You and your child can practice the deadlift along with us at home while picking up toys, playing outside, or as part of a game! Use these proper and safe techniques to turn everyday activities into opportunities to exercise and learn!

 The Set-up:

1) Have Child stand over object. Can be a weightless ball, toy, or a light weight or Kettlebell.

2) Tell Child to bend over and grab the object. The object should remain on the floor.

3) Tell Child to get an “angry gorilla” back. In this position lower back will be protected as shoulders will be rolled back, chest will remain up so you can see the front of your childs t-shirt, and hips will naturally push back so knees bend… Thus, simulating a very angry gorilla. Encourage your child to mimic how an angry gorilla might sound!

 The Lift:

4) Tell your Child to “Stand-up”!

 The Finish/ Reset:

5) Tell your child to keep an “angry gorilla back” and set the object down.

 Ages:
CF Hyperformance offers progressive classes for: elementry school (ages 6-10), middle school (ages 11 – 14), and teens (14-17). Kids classes last 30-45 minutes. Crossfit Kids Classes Now Offered in Savannah at Crossfit Hyperformance

Sunday, December 11th, 2011

This holiday season give your children the gift of Wellness by creating a lifelong love of Health and Fitness with Crossfit Kids.

Crossfit Kids Pairs Fitness with FUN! Crossfit believes kids should be exposed to potent, effective, and functional movement with appropriate coaching and cueing. However, Crossfit’s ultimate goal is linking fitness with fun.

About the Program.
Crossfit Kids (CFK) is for children in elementary school, middle, and high school. It combines gymnastics, body weight calisthenics, and weightlifting elements to develop a broad capacity across ten general physical skills:
Cardiorespiratory endurance
Power
Strength
Stamina
Speed
Agility
Flexibility
Balance
Accuracy
Coordination

Additional elements that encourage bone density development, cross body movements, and the vestibular balance system are also incorporated. Children and teens have a greater opportunity (relative to adults) to maximize their physical skills when exposed to this stimulus during years of peak development. The elements are combined to keep children engaged and entertained, while teaching them proper movement technique and creating a broad athletic foundation. Nutrition is also discussed as the basis of athletic performance and health within a supportive community. For CFK, it is imperative to pair fitness and fun, to create a lifelong love of health and fitness for our children.

Ages:
CF Hyperformance offers progressive classes for: elementry school (ages 5-10), middle school (ages 11 – 14), and teens (14-17). Kids classes last 30-45 minutes. Stroller Fitness is a mobile way for you to get a full body work out and still be able to attend to your baby’s needs. Each class includes intervals of power walking, functional strength training and cardio drills followed by postnatal-specific core work and flexibility. Our mobile intervals are ideal for babies who like to be on the move. Come out and meet other moms in your community!
Women should be 4+ weeks postpartum (6 weeks for caesareans). All fitness levels are welcome. Please bring a yoga mat and a water bottle. You do not need a jogging stroller. For safety reasons, mobile babies & tots should remain in their strollers/carriers/mom’s arms until core work is performed.
