In celebration of the exhibition, ‘Norman Rockwell and Peers,’ families are encouraged to come witness the talents of local children’s book illustrators and discover their own inner artists with creative studio activities.

Georgia State Railroad Museum and Savannah Children’s Museum will transform into a magical Harry Potter-themed experience during “Frogwarts” on Sunday, October 20 2024, 11AM- 3PM.
Families are immersed in STEAM activities, such as chemistry, engineering, biology, and art, all disguised as magical classes inspired by the beloved book series. Lowcountry Turners will be making custom lathe-turned wands that will be available for purchase while supplies last.
Other activities will be led by CHS’s community partners including Dogwood Pediatric Dentistry, Callaway Critters, Georgia Southern Center for Wildlife Education, Memorial Health Dwaine & Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital, Coastal Rail Buffs, Savannah Speech and Hearing, and Starbase Savannah.

Wee Wonders Wednesday: STEAM-based programs designed for little learners to spark curiosity and discover their connection to the natural world.
Tortoise & Turtle Thursday: Visitors have a chance to meet SCM’s Russian Tortoise as well as SCM’s yellow-bellied slider Pogo. Learn facts about their friendly reptiles and opportunities to touch and observe.
Farm Friday: Visitors will have an opportunity to explore Frogtown Garden and learn about a variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs that are growing. Be sure to ask for a sample of SCM’s Farm to Table snack of the day.
Surprise Saturday: Educators will rotate some of the Favorite Programs that will be sure to educate and WOW visitors.
Sensory Art Sunday: Come to the Arty Party where visitors have the opportunity to explore Sensory Process Art projects to express themselves through creative, hands-on, and sometimes MESSY activities.

Borrowing inspiration from Iván Argote’s exhibition The Burden of the Invisible, assemble large planters with native flora as an homage to your history of place. Consider how Argote’s exhibition honors people in a new way as you reimagine historical monuments of the South.

Inspired by Awol Erizku’s exhibition X, SCAD alum Michael Schalk (B.F.A., photography, 2017) guides students through photographic storytelling. By incorporating sentimental elements and colors to reflect individuality, participants design a photoshoot to evoke their personalities using a cellphone camera and Polaroids shared among the group.

Campers will partake in outdoor battle reenactments while learning about the real heroes that fought in them such as Audie Murphy and John Basilone. Your camper will see a piece of history; our WWII B-17 when we tour the museum. Mud, water guns, and more in our high-energy camps!
The museum space is entirely outdoors, built within the former Central of Georgia Railway repair facility and adjacent to Georgia State Railroad Museum. The museum features over a dozen carefully-designed exhibits including an exploration maze, a reading nook, a sensory garden, and a nature kitchen.

There will be enhanced programming this Memorial Day Weekend 2024 @ Old Fort Jackson in Savannah including volunteers on site on Sat. May 25 and exploring the different eras of the site’s military history on Sun. & Mon., May 26-27.

9:20AM – Coastal Heritage Society Resource Educators and Volunteers will offer live music by Bella Harmony Music and activities by Union Soldiers, Confederate Soldiers and Sailors, and the Ladies Gunboat Society and Women of Savannah!
10AM -12 Pounder Cannon Firing, followed by Stations.
10:30AM – Dance.
11AM – Hear various perspectives from the Situation in Savannah and nearby in April of 1862. Relieve the Skirmish on Whitemarsh Island.
11:30AM – Hear the conclusion, followed by the firing of our mighty 32 Pounder Cannon.
12:30AM – Dance.
12:45AM – Guard Mount.
1:15PM – Mail Cail.
1:30PM – Signaling and 6 Pounder Cannon Firing.

9:30AM – Coastal Heritage Society Resource Educators will portray Regular Soldiers of the US Army and Georgia Militia Men from the War of 1812 Era while offering exciting history presentations! Learn about the construction of Savannah defenses, along with musket and heavy artillery skills.
10AM – Smythe’s Manual Infantry Presentation.
10:30AM – Stations.
11AM- Hear various perspectives from the Situation in Savannah during the War of 1812 and Creek War. Relieve the Battle of Calabee Creek.
11:30AM – Hear the conclusion of the Battle and the defense of Savannah in late 1814, followed by the firing of our mighty 24 Pounder Cannon.

Mon. May 27 (Memorial Day) @ Old Fort Jackson, Savannah
9:30AM – Stations – Coastal Heritage Society Resource Educators will portray Soldiers of the Four American Armies that served on the ground where Old Fort Jackson stands while offering exciting history presentations! Learn about the stories and skills of soldiers during the American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War, including musket firings.
11AM – 12 Pounder Cannon Firing.
11:30AM – Remember soldiers who gave their lives in battle and witness the firing of our mighty 24 and 32 Pounder Cannon, while the American Flag is raised from half mast to full mast at Noon.
1PM – Revolutionary War Era Infantry Presentation on the Parade.
1:30PM – Riverboat Salute with 6 Pounder Cannon.
2PM – Get an overview of the American Revolutionary War in Savannah and beyond. Relieve the Battle of Cowpens.
2:30PM – 24 Pounder Cannon Firing.
4PM – Fort closed.

Memorial Day Commemoration @ Fort McAllister State Park, Richmond HIll is Sat. May 25, 9AM-4PM
Pay tribute to our fellow patriots who died while serving in the US military. Living history interpretations will take place throughout the day including musket and cannon firings.
Tour the fort, museum, and grounds of Fort McAllister along the banks of the Ogeechee River.
Regular Fort admission prices apply. 2PM guided tour $8 – $15
