Youth & Teen Virtual Arts Classes with Savannah Cultural Arts Center

Nurture artistic talent with virtual arts classes from the Savannah Cultural Arts Center.

Classes start the week of April 5 2021 (next week!) and include options for ages 5 and older.

Artist Adventures

Each week, a different activity prepared for ages 9 to 12 years will foster creative expression. A variety of visual arts skills across different media will be explored and paired with famous artists and art movements. Register online here. 

Art Journaling for Teens (FREE)

Expand or jumpstart your journaling practice! This course for ages 13 to 17 will explore various stream of consciousness writing, collage, and painting exercises. Register online here. 

Teen Clay

This fun and energetic class is geared to ages 13 to 17 with any level of experience and will cover a mix of skill-building and experimental projects. (Registration includes clay from the Savannah Cultural Arts Center). Register online here. 

Drama Adventures in Oz

Explore theater through the imaginary world of Oz! Each class features a new creative adventure and encourages young performers of any ability to build confidence and express themselves on stage and on the Zoom screen. Two sessions for ages 5 to 7 and 8 to 12. Register online here. 

On Stage: Teen Acting

Spark creativity and hone core acting skills in this virtual class! Open to all levels and ages 13 to 15, this course will utilize guided improvisation, scene work, and script analysis to create authentic, fun, and purposeful performances. Register online here.

Bring a buddy and get muddy! Join us for a night of fun and creativity exploring clay in a supportive environment. This night is for couples and is open to all skill levels. We will work on the wheel and see what we get! The fee includes all materials, glaze, and firing of one piece per person. Pieces will be available to pick up 2-3weeks after the class. Night is limited to 5 couples.

Parent & Child Nightlight Glass Fusing Workshop NEW!

Sat. Dec. 2, 10AM-1PM
As the nights get longer, scare away the monsters with a nightlight that you and your youngster created together. Come join the fun and learn how to crush, cut, and melt glass into your own unique design. We will be using real glass to make a fused glass nightlight. Because we are using glass, children must be over the age of 5 to participate and an adult must be present. Please note: projects will be available for pick up at a later date due to the kiln firing process. Workshop is limited to 10 students total.

This 6-week afterschool class will teach young adults of all skill levels awesome methods to create wearable works of art. Students will explore basic jewelry making techniques like wire wrapping, enameling, kumihimo, beading, and macramé. Students will complete the session with 6 pieces of jewelry art. Afterschool Drawing Fundamentals for Youth (6 Weeks)

This class will focus primarily on foundational drawing techniques. Students will learn the fundamental principle of using basic shapes to construct images. Students will explore drawing with stylization, movement (gesture drawing), and how to develop details. As students learn and discover their own shape language from the classes, they will be able to use the basic drawing principles taught during the class to build their future drawing skills.

Afterschool Portfolio Prep for Youth (6 Weeks) NEW!

Build an eye catching artist portfolio to meet your individual needs! The class will consist of creating artworks based on the foundations of the Visual Arts. Illustrations from real life, original paintings, and an array of techniques will emphasize your uniqueness and self- expression. If you are struggling with certain materials or concepts, critiques during the art making process will help guide and improve the final product. The culmination of these pieces will be structured into an artist portfolio to present to future schools or for personal assessment.

A favorite kid-friendly Savannah businesses – Savannah’s Clay Spot – offers a variety of kids’ holiday clay classes starting in November 2017 & after-school pottery classes as well as parent-&-child clay classes. This wonderful pottery studio also offers a Holiday Kids’ Camp. 

Kids with Clay Pottery Class, for ages 6-12
Students will learn fundamental techniques with hand building and throwing basic forms on the potter’s wheel. Youth will be challenged to create dynamic surface decorations using glazes, slips and applied elements.

Register now for The City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs Fall 2017 Visual Arts classes and Workshops.

Day and evening sessions are offered for children, teens and adults in all skill levels.  Classes begin September 11 and run through October 20. All classes and workshops are held at the Department of Cultural Affairs studios, located at 9 W. Henry St.

One-day weekend workshops & six-week classes are available.  Visual arts sessions include ceramics, metals, glass, printmaking and fibers. New this session are jewelry-making, screen-printing, after-school fiber arts, after-school yoga & painting, drawing & more.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required.  Credit cards are accepted.

Come experiment with the cool and versatile art of screen-printing! Students will learn how to burn their own silk screens with their own images, print on paper and fabric, and learn how to care for, recycle, and reuse a screen. Tuesdays, September 12 – October 17, 3:30pm – 5:00pm
Dive into Fiber Arts with Ms. Mary! Participants will learn how to create their own weaving board and work with a variety of fiber materials. The class will cover basic hand weaving techniques on a cardboard loom and students to create a small bag, a stuffed animal, or a decorative pillow. This class will also explore the art of hand embroidery. Learn the fundamentals of hand embroidery, a variety of techniques and different stiches. Participants will learn the basics of embroidery and decorate an item of their choice.

A 6 week progressive workshop that builds upon yoga inspired movement as an expressive art form. Students of all capabilities will learn movement patterns, and then express them into color on paper! We’ll work with dry and wet mediums to create colorful translations of how we move. A unique after school experience that promotes positive self-love and creates a take-away art piece your tween and teen can be proud of. Class is limited to 15 students.

Heroic Drawing and Painting – Large Scale (6 Weeks) NEW!

Actor’s Studio: Intro to Acting for Youth (6 Weeks) NEW

Wednesdays, November 2 – December 14, 4:00pm – 5:30pm
For six weeks, students will participate in activities and exercises to help them make character choices and learn how to convey emotions to an audience. From monologues to silent scenes, blocking, and expressive movement, this course will help prepare you for all the elements of theatre and help you conquer the stage!

Character Design (6 Weeks) NEW

Ages: 12+
Wednesdays, November 2 – December 14, 4:00 – 5:30pm
This six-week class will focus primarily in foundational drawing techniques. Students will learn the fundamental principle of using basic shapes to construct images, specifically designing characters. Lesson one covers some of the basics for drawing the human figure (no nudity). The rest of the lessons build off this principle and dives into how to draw with stylization, movement (gesture drawing), and how to develop details. As students learn and discover their own shape language from these classes, they will be able to use this principle in many more ways than just character design.

ArtStart, pottery, dance & more this Fall @ Arts Center of Coastal Carolina

Art Workshops Homeschool Hilton Head Island Homeschool families, here’s something perfect for you: two 5-week art classes, one for 2-5 year olds and another for 13 and older!

The younger set will enjoy lessons designed to help them develop fine motor skills and encourage creativity through visual arts, learning color and shape recognition, how to use art tools and visual art concepts as they explore an array of media and methods. (Tuesdays, Oct. 4-Nov. 1, 10-11AM, must be accompanied by an adult.)

Students 13 and older will learn clay hand building techniques such as slab, pinch and coil to complete several functional works of art such as a bread basket, butter dish and pots. (Tuesdays, Oct. 4-Nov. 1, 12 noon – 2pm.)

Both classes will be at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina mid-island on Hilton Head.
