Oktoberfest Weiner Dog races; free kids events in Savannah Fall 2014It’s a Wiener Dog Racing, Bratwurst Tasting, Oompah Dancing celebration at Savannah’s 32st Annual Oktoberfest on Historic River Street!

Enjoy a bit of Germany…Savannah style with a beer garden offering a variety of beers, food booths featuring German cuisine, and of course the famous Wiener Dog Races hosted by Savannah Morning News. There will be regional arts & crafts exhibitors, live entertainment on the Arbor Stage, and all weekend long.

Big Blue Live starts Aug. 31 on PBS

Big Blue Live PBS BBC Savannah GPBBIG BLUE LIVE airs live on PBS over three nights, Aug. 31-Sept. 2, 2015, 8-9PM ET (in Savannah on GPB/Georgia Public Broadcasting & in South Carolina on ETV)

Big Blue Live celebrates a wildlife success story and marine animal phenomenon: humpback whales, blue whales, sea lions, elephant seals, sea otters, great white sharks, shearwaters, and brown pelican and more all convene in Monterey Bay once a year.

In this live television and multimedia event,  scientists, filmmakers and photographers, animal behaviorists and other experts will come together for two amazing live weeks in late August and early September to document the extraordinary rejuvenation of the once endangered and now thriving ecosystem of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in California.

Fall 2015 Classes & Workshops run Sept. 14 – Oct. 24 @ City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs studios at 9 W. Henry St.

Class fees include instruction, use of studio space, use of equipment and all materials and tools required. Space is limited and advance registration is required.  Credit cards are accepted.

Fused Glass Wind Chime
Instructor: Christine Hefner
Ages 12+, Saturday, Oct. 3, 10am-12pm
Join this hands-on workshop open to all skill levels interested in fused glass. Students will learn basic glass cutting and fusing techniques creating a unique fused glass wind chime.
$15/$10 city resident

Parent and Child: Felted Stuffed Fish NEW
Instructor: Mary Bass
Ages 5+, Saturday, Oct. 3, 10am-12pm
In this two hour parent and child workshop, students will learn how to design a felted fish pillow. Basic sewing, stitching and embroidery techniques will be taught.

“I can’t” (Yes you can) – A Multimedia Workshop NEW
Instructor: Coco Papy
Ages 8+, Saturday, Oct. 3, 10am-12pm
A one day workshop that explores how the feelings of ‘I can’t’ keep you from creating a work of art.
Do you give up before you even get going? That what is in your head doesn’t match what’s on the paper? Ever looked at what you are working on in front of you and said, I can’t? Well no more can’t! This course is designed to strengthen and expand your art-making skills and ideas through a creative exploration of traditional and unconventional materials.

Fused Glass Checkerboard & Checkers
Instructor: Christine Hefner
Ages 14+, Saturday, Oct. 10, 10am-12pm
In this workshop, students will learn how to uniformly cut glass to make a one-of-a-kind checkerboard. Students will also learn how to make simple checkers pieces for a fun and creative way to enhance your game night!

Everything Not Sewn: Felting Workshop NEW
Instructor: Camille Hulbert
Ages 12+, Saturday, Oct. 10, 10am – 2pm
In this one day workshop students will learn the traditional art of felting as a non-woven or sewn fiber arts application. Students will learn basic techniques in both binding and wet felting.
$35/$30 city resident

Raku
Instructor: Clair Buckner
All Ages, Saturday, Oct. 24, 10am – 2pm
This ancient Japanese ceramic firing technique in which 1800° glowing red hot works are removed from the kiln and placed into a reduction chamber filled with combustibles is sure to inflame and inspire. Personal bisque fired works can be glazed and fired. Pieces will be available for those who want to participate.
$10 per piece fired

Festive Mask Making
Instructor: Mary Bass
Ages 8+, Saturday, Oct. 24, 10am-12pm
Come transform yourself into any creature you’d like! In this two hour workshop, students will learn how to make a festive mask out of felt! Basic sewing and embroidery techniques will be covered.

This introductory clay class will teach young students the fundamentals of hand building and sculpture. Students will work with coils and slabs and a variety of glazes.

Free Fishing Tybee event for kids 2015 Bring your kids to the FREE Gage Ochsner Kids Fishing & Coastal Water Safety event 8:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 26 2015 at the Tybee Pier & Pavilion on Tybee Island.

The day of FREE fun for kids ages 5 to 12 is being held in conjunction with Georgia’s free fishing day & is sponsored by Safe Kids Savannah, the Chatham County Aquatic Center, & the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to promote fishing as a family activity & water safety.

This is the sixth consecutive year for the event which is named in memory of Gage Ochsner, M.D., a long-time supporter of Safe Kids Savannah and specifically the Kids Fishing and Coastal Water Safety event.

Pre-registration is required.

Entry is limited and pre-registration is required. No registration will be allowed on the day of the event.

Registration forms can be picked up at the Chatham County Aquatic Center on Sallie Mood Drive in Savannah or downloaded from http://aquatic.chathamcounty.org/

All participants will receive a rod and reel, bait, and tackle box.

Register your child for Tybee Island 7th Annual Spelling Bee, Oct. 1

Spelling Bee Tybee Island 2015 Students in 4th-8th grade are invited to participate in Tybee Island’s 7th Annual Spelling Bee, 6:30 PM Thursday, October 1, 2015 @ Tybee YMCA gym. (Teams arrive at 6PM)

All money raised will be donated to the Tybee Island Maritime Academy.

Organizers are seeking teams to participate (students in 4th – 8th grade from any schools or home-schoolers) as well as sponsors to help underwrite the event, and of course, people to come cheer on the teams.

Admission is $5 per adult, $2 per student.

There will also be a split-the-pot raffle available. Tickets will be sold prior to the bee and the night of. Raffle tickets at $5 each or 5 for $20.

Teams are given rules and asked to familiarize themselves with them. The teams have 4 people on them. There are 3 adults and one student (grades 4-8). If a team needs a student, the school has them waiting in the wings. The teams can huddle after they are given the word, then only one person comes to the microphone at a time. Each person on the team spells in turn.

Teams can raise money for their team to earn a “spell-a-gain.” The team who raises the most money wins one “spell-a-gain”, which entitles that team to a new word if they misspelled the word given.

A second “spell-a-gain” will be awarded to a team. For every $100 each team raises the team’s name will be placed in the hat. So if they raise $200, it will be placed in twice, $300 three times, etc. One lucky team will be drawn from the hat and awarded a “spell-a-gain”.

All money earned by the teams should be cash or checks made payable to Tybee Island Maritime Academy.

Words used will be taken from the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee here.

Teams dress up, and act crazy. It’s a family event and lots of fun for all.

Bacon Fest 2015 Savannah Free family events BACON FEST 2015 at Savannah’s Historic River Street

The 2nd annual event will be Sept. 4 & 5 2015. Get ready because select local restaurants will be serving up their mouthwatering bacon creations which will be available for purchase.

Items available include: candied bacon, bacon popcorn, bacon brownies, bacon wrapped shrimp, bacon wrapped hot dogs, bacon cream soda ice cream float, bacon chips with peach jelly dip, pulled pork stuffed bacon poppers, and bacon super chicken bombs. You can find these items and more served up from these local favorites: Ampersand, Andaz Savannah, Bayou Café, Cheesecake Market, Chocolat by Adam Turoni, Feather & Freight, Leopold’s Ice Cream, Savannah Rae’s Popcorn, The Naked Dog, Tondee’s Tavern, Treylor Park, and Wet Willies.

Bacon Fest will kick-off on Fri. Sept. 4 from 4-10PM. September First Friday Fireworks presented by Wet Willie’s begin at 9:30PM. The festivities will continue on Sat. Sept. 5 from 10AM-10PM.

Regional artisans will be set up along Rousakis Plaza displaying a variety of handmade works for festival goers to browse through.

This Halloween season in Savannah experience a New Show from those who have pleased crowds in the past.

During October 2015, see an historical entertainment on the many EXTRAORDINARY ideas, beliefs and objects with which people in the 1820s would have been familiar. Images and phenomena to be considered include VISUALIZATION OF THE SUPERNATURAL, Phantasmagoria, Frankenstein, Animal Magnetism and THE COURT OF DEATH. While visitors maneuver the historic site they will come into contact with those who lived there in 1828 as they hear about what thrilled, scared and horrified Savannahians of that time. Attention will be paid to spiritual convictions of Lowcountry African Americans of the past.

2015 Buddy Walk & FREE Family Fun Festival, Oct. 3, Savannah

Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society The 2015 Buddy Walk will be Saturday, Oct. 3 at 10AM in Forsyth Park in historic downtown Savannah.

The 10th annual one-mile fundraiser benefits the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS). About four thousand people attended the walk last year and thousands are expected to attend the event this year. The Buddy Walk raises awareness and funds for local programs, includingCamp Buddy, that benefit people with Down Syndrome and their families.

The Buddy Walk Program encourages participants of all ages and abilities. Carriages, strollers, wheelchairs, little red wagons and pets are all welcome. The goals are to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome and to positively influence local and national policy and practice. Past Buddy Walk events have raised millions to benefit education, research, and advocacy initiatives nationally, as well as the Night of Champions, Camp Buddy and many other services here in the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire.

Calling all zealous kids & high-spirited merry-makers. Organizers of the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society 9th Annual Buddy Walk want YOU to line the corners of the Forsyth Park (Drayton and Gaston; Drayton & Park; Whitaker & Gaston; Whitaker & Park) to encourage & Hi-Five all the walkers @ the 1-mile fundraising walk taking place this Sat. Oct. 3. The LDSS team will be recognizing three cheerers from the crowd, based on: “Most Spirited”; “Puts a Smile on My Face” ; “Unsung Hero”. Group Cheer Squads are welcome,too. Family Fun Festival

The LDSS Buddy Walk is one of more than 300 Buddy Walks taking place across the country this October to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
Online registration is available at www.ldssga.org until Wednesday, Oct 1 at midnight. Participants can also signup starting at 8:30 am the day of the event. Registration is $15 per person or $50 for a family of four, which includes a T-Shirt, lunch and admission to the festival.
