17. Hunting Island State Park, S.C. The historic lighthouse at Hunting Island State Park is the only publicly accessible lighthouse in South Carolina. For an admission of $2, visitors can climb the 167 steps & walk around the observation deck for a lofty view of the barrier island and surrounding seascape. The Parris Island Museum – located on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina – features thousands of artifacts, images, and other materials that illustrate the history of Port Royal and Parris Island, from early Native American inhabitants of Port Royal to the modern Marines. On display are artifacts depicting Port Royal’s important military role from the American Revolution to the Civil War, along with development of the island into a Marine Corps installation after the Spanish-American War through the present. Alongside Marine Corps history, there are exhibits devoted to the Charlesfort-Santa Elena National Historic Landmark, site of French and Spanish colonies on Parris Island between 1562 and 1587.

To aid in curbing this growing epidemic of childhood obesity, the Junior League of Savannah will be hosting their second annual Fit Kids Fest on Saturday, April 5, 2014 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Optimist Field in Daffin Park.

Fit Kids Fest is a free community event, focused on increasing awareness and prevention of childhood obesity by providing children and their parents with resources and tools to help them make more educated choices and live more active, healthy lifestyles.

Junior League members will be offering tips on making healthy meals and snacks, and providing several opportunities for children to engage in physical activity demonstrations.

Thanks to generous partners at the Savannah Sand Gnats minor league baseball team, the first 250 children who attend Fit Kids Fest will also receive a free ticket to the Sand Gnats baseball game at Historic Grayson Stadium later on that same evening.

On Saturday, March 22 at 9 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1802 Abercorn Street (corner of 34th & Abercorn), the Savannah Children’s Choir will hold auditions for Summer Camp financial aid.

Children currently in 1st through 6th grades who are interested in attending this two-week camp, held July 14-25 on the campus of the Esther F. Garrison School of Visual and Performing Arts are encouraged to come and audition. This year’s camp, with the theme of “At The Improv”, will focus on building solid musical skills as well as improvisation skills, and will conclude with “Night at the Improv”, a public concert at the historic Lucas Theater on Friday, July 25 at 7 p.m.

The Savannah Christian Preparatory School Fine Arts Council presents Disney’s PETER PAN JR at Trustees’ Theater, 216 E Broughton St, Savannah, 31401.

This musical adventure is based on the play by J.M. Barrie and the 1953 Disney film. The cast is comprised of 69 3rd through 12th grade students, selected by audition.

Important Information:
Pre-registration and Pre-payment are required.
Space is limited in each of the camps, so early registration is important.
Lunches will not be provided for campers. Each child should bring their lunch with them daily.
Cost of camps include supplies, take-home materials, and a special camp gift for each camper.

Within 10 days of registering a child, you will be emailed the official Summer Camp Guide and Policy Handbook, along with emergency forms to fill out and return. No child will be admitted to a camp without the necessary paperwork on file.

FREE Natural Resource Discovery Day and a FREE Photography Workshop are planned for Sat. March 8, 2014 @ the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.

Bring the whole family for a free, educational, fun-filled day at the Savannah NWR Visitor Center. Start with a kids photography workshop from 8:30-10 AM, then stick around for their annual free Natural Resource Discovery Day event.

FREE Natural Resource Discover Day

Come join the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for some free, family fun at Savannah National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) Visitor Center on Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 10am-4pm. Partnering with the Savannah Chapter of the National Wildlife Turkey Federation (NWTF), Georgia Southern University, Friends of the Savannah Coastal Refuges, University of Georgia -Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and Marine Science Center, this year’s event will be loaded with fun, wildlife-related educational activities for all ages.

Have you ever wondered what a biologist, a wildland firefighter, an archaeologist, a forester or a refuge manager does on a national wildlife refuge? Well, this is your chance to learn! See how birds are banded (even band yourself!); learn about wildland fire with hands-on activities involving real fire equipment; try your luck at target shooting with a BB gun or bow, while learning about the refuge hunt program; gain a better understanding of the Fish and Wildlife Service’s role in protecting endangered species; learn why water management matters to wildlife on Savannah NWR, get close up with a variety of reptiles and much more. A special presentation on wilderness will be offered at 11am and 1pm.

FREE Kids Photography Class

In addition to Discovery Day activities, the Refuge will be conducting a photography workshop for children ages 16 and under. The workshop is intended to help young photographers learn more about photography using the natural environment of the refuge. The class will be held from 8:30-10am so participants will still be able to enjoy the Discovery Day activities. The class is free; however, reservations are required due to limited seating.

All activities will be at the Savannah NWR Visitor Center located at 694 Beech Hill Lane Hardeeville, SC (off U.S. 17, approximately 7 miles north of Savannah, GA and 7 miles south of Hardeeville, SC). May 10: FREE Bike Rodeo

Skidaway Island State Park in Savannah will host an educational event for children to practice bike skills and learn how to safely navigate roads and traffic. Skidaway’s Bike Rodeo is in partnership with the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.

A bike rodeo is a fun, educational event for children to practice bike skills and learn how to safely navigate roads and traffic. Kids will tackle different stations, each with a different game or challenge. For example, riders might weave between traffic cones to practice balance skills or have a “slow race” where the last one across the finish line wins. Please remember, by Georgia law, all kids under 16 years of age must wear a helmet.

The event is May 10 from 10 am to 1 pm and is free with your $5 parking pass.

This parade is a family oriented event designed for everyone’s enjoyment and participation. Spectators, in excess of 20,000 people, are always delighted with the antics of clowns, marching bands, entertaining Shiners’, beautiful floats, and all the marching units and dignitaries. It is wonderful to see so many participants in this community event.

This year’s hunt will be for children up through 5th Grade.

There will be one hunt at 9am and one hunt at 10am, with separate fields for older and younger children.

This is a FREE event, but to help organizers plan a fun and safe event for everyone, they do require each child participating to reserve a ticket through Eventbrite. A printed copy of each ticket must be presented at the event in order to be admitted.

*When you reserve your child’s ticket, please be sure to select the ticket that matches your child’s age range (either 4 Years and Under or 5 Years – 5th Grade) and desired hunt time (either 9am or 10am)
