Free Savannah Asian Cultural Festival, March 27-28

Free Savannah Asian Festival, Armstrong State University and the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs will present the 2015 Savannah Asian Cultural Festival, one of the South’s largest Asian celebrations, on March 27 and 28.

For the first time, all events will take place at Armstrong’s campus at 11935 Abercorn St. in Savannah. The festival is free and open to the public.

The 20th Annual Savannah Asian Cultural Festival will bring the continent of Asia to coastal Georgia, celebrate the rich diversity of the area and feature unique cultures, cuisine, live performances and more. The festival will offer samplings from local restaurants and a selection of regional favorites from Polynesia, China, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand.

A Cultural Marketplace will offer the opportunity to learn more about each country and discover the traditional arts, crafts, fashions and treasures unique to each nation. From Ming-shared jewelry to calligraphy sets, original paintings, hand-beaded clothing, Asian accessories and henna body painting, an entire continent’s worth of treasures can be found at Armstrong.

The festivities will kick off on Friday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. with a free live performance by Arya International, an Indian dance troupe from New York City, at the Armstrong Fine Arts Auditorium. Attendees can enjoy an evening of dance, from classical Bharatnatyam to entrancing Bollywood performances.

On Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the festival will offer a full day of live stage performances on two separate stages, including martial arts demonstrations, cultural displays, arts and crafts, educational workshops and more.

On March 28, the Savannah Asian Cultural Festival schedule for performers on the main stage, located on Burnett Lawn, is as follows:

11 a.m. – Official opening with the Parade of Nations showcasing flags and representatives in indigenous dress from the Asian countries

11:45 a.m. – Performance by the Taiko Drums of Japan

12:15 p.m. – Lee’s Tae Kwon Do Exhibition of South Korea

12:45 p.m. – Dragon Dance around the festival grounds with Hac Long Duong Performers of Vietnam

1:15 p.m. – Dances from Thailand and China

1:45 p.m. – Dances from the Philippines

2:15 p.m. – Children of Polynesia and performance by the Southeast Korean Dance Association

2:45 p.m. – Lee’s Tae Kwon Do Exhibition of South Korea

3:45 p.m. – Dragon Dance with Hac Long Duong Performers of Vietnam

The festival will also include free educational workshops in Armstrong’s International Garden. The workshop schedule is as follows:

12:30 p.m. – Pakistan Tea Ceremony

1:30 p.m. – Tai Chi workshop with Myung Lee of South Korea

2:30 p.m. – Oriental Belly Dancing Workshop with Yara Dancs

Armstrong’s Free Outdoor Arts Festival

The 2015 Savannah Asian Cultural Festival will be presented in conjunction with Armstrong’s Outdoor Arts Festival on March 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the university’s Fine Arts Hall Courtyard.

Highlights at this family-friendly festival include hands-on arts and crafts, dance, theater and live music. All events are free and open to the public.

This event is focused on teaching hands-on STEM activities to let kids decide if Engineering/STEM is a career path they would consider in their future.

Students will go through 3 activities focused on different kinds of engineering taught by local technologists. Events include: a STEM Expo which are small activities provided by local companies, surrounding universities, and professional organizations; then students break into groups to begin the 3 activities (1 hr a piece).

While the students are learning, there is a separate event for the adults. Adults will be educated on everything they might need to keep the students interested in STEM, college prep, financial aid, even community opportunities for internships.

Adults will learn their own STEM activity that they will be able to take home to teach the students what they learned.

Cost: $5 a student. The event is limited to 200 students (100 middle and 100 high school). This event sells out every year.

Between the recreational and the micro programs, Savannah United is moving the players into a standard uniform package – same package for every player on every team. Each player on each team will get a LIGHT BLUE and a LIME jersey. This will help simplify the process as players may shift between teams from fall to spring and year to year.

The game schedule will details which uniform to wear. One team will wear LIGHT BLUE and the other will wear the LIME, the schedule will make it clear who is to wear which color.

Each team can wear whichever color socks, shorts, shoes as they wish.

PLAYING
+ Practices will begin for those who are registered on February 23rd
+ Games will begin on March 14th
+ No games on April 4th
+ Last games will be on May 9th

Welcome the owlets:  This is the time to watch the Savannah Great Horned Owl mom on Skidaway Island LIVE via The Landings Bird Cam video feed. The two owlets are growing so fast and the mama owl is working so hard to keep them well-fed & protected.

Visit  The Landings Bird Cam or The Cornell Lab of Ornithology to see live 24/7 video with audio of what is happening in the abandoned eagle’s nest that is atop a pine tree in The Landings.

Watch the two chicks grow and fledge.

The streaming video is made possible thanks to a partnership with Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. The video feed can also be seen on the Georgia DNR site http://www.georgiawildlife.com/cams

A few Pre-K spots remain but will fill up quickly.

Pre-K registration is taken on a first come first served basis. So please register as early as possible

This free, state-funded Pre-K is open to all children who are 4 years old by Sept. 1.

Parents need to bring proof of birth  and proof of residency.

Maggie’s Morning School is open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. School starts Monday August 10 2015.

For the school year, Maggie’s serves children ages 18 months (by Sept 1) through 3 classes of State-Funded (FREE) Pre-K. Maggie’s Morning School in Savannah offers part-time preschool for 4-year-olds.
