Save the date: 2015 FREE Fit Kids Fest, Savannah, April 18

March 26th, 2015

Junior League of Savannah KidsFest 2015 Free Family Events Savannah Junior League of Savannah to Host Fit Kids Fest free interactive health and fitness event for area kids and their parents Saturday, April 18, 2015, 3-5 PM at Optimist Field in Daffin Park.

Since the mid 1980’s obesity has increased so that not only is it considered an epidemic, but it has become one of the most serious public health problems facing the United States. One in three children in Chatham County is considered obese. Studies show that overweight kids are more likely to become overweight and obese adults. If obesity among kids continues to increase at this rate, our current generation could become the first in history to live shorter and sicker lives than their parents.

To aid in curbing this growing epidemic, the Junior League of Savannah will host their third annual Fit Kids Fest on Saturday, April 18th, 2015 from 3-5PM at Optimist Field in Daffin Park.

The first 250 kids will receive free tickets to that evening’s Sand Gnats game and a free t-shirt.

Fit Kids Fest is a free community event, focused on increasing awareness and prevention of childhood obesity by providing children and their parents with resources and tools to help them make more educated choices and live active, healthy lifestyles.

Tummy Time Foods will be this year’s event,  hosting a healthy cooking demonstration for children and their families.

Urge our Ga. state representatives to vote NO on State School Takeover

March 23rd, 2015

No on Georgia School Privatization and School Takeover

(UPDATE: Stay connected with this issue by clicking here. )

ALERT – Please urge our State representatives to vote NO on State School Takeover

The Georgia State Legislature is voting on a proposed amendment to our state constitution that will allow the Governor to take over “failing” public schools and hand them over to private for-profit corporations to run without any local oversight.

The State Senate has already voted in favor of the bill and the House could vote as early as today and definitely by April 2nd. Because it is a constitutional amendment, it will require a 2/3 majority to pass. This means that every vote matters, and reaching out to our legislators can make a real difference.

Please call or email today and ask your friends to do the same:

Savannah’s Members of the State House:
Rep. J. Craig Gordon: craig.gordon@house.ga.gov
Rep. Ron Stephens: ron.stephens@house.ga.gov
Rep. Mickey Stephens: mickey.stephens@gmail.com
Rep. Jesse Petrea: jesse.petrea@house.ga.gov

Not in Savannah? Find your state representative here:
http://openstates.org/ga/legislators/

The proposed amendment would create an “Opportunity School District” of up to 100 schools that would be run by State government using local taxpayer dollars but with no oversight from local school boards. The amendment would allow the State to turn those schools over to for-profit corporations to run.

The folks who support the takeover bill often point to the success of particular charter schools and suggest that what they are proposing is just lots of great charter schools. This is not the case. The charter schools Savannah currently has are non-profit, community-run schools chartered by our local school board. State takeover and privatization is something entirely different.

As an active member of my PTA who speaks regularly to my School Board representative and School Board President, I believe that our local elected officials are responsive to parents, care deeply about our children, and are working hard to close the gap between our low-income and middle-income students. Our low-income students definitely need more help, but I don’t believe that state takeover and privatization is the answer.

You can read more about the plan on the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s education blog: http://getschooled.blog.ajc.com/

Here are a few recent news articles:
http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local-education/deals-school-takeover-plan-survives-house-committe/nkc4h/
http://politics.blog.ajc.com/2015/03/18/the-gop-discomfort-over-nathan-deals-school-rescue-plan/

The plan is based on what happened in New Orleans. The Tulane University report claiming that was a success had to be retracted because the data was so bad:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2014/10/16/oops-never-mind-why-a-major-university-retracted-report-on-charter-schools/

This policy also created an absolute mess in Tennessee:
http://getschooled.blog.ajc.com/2015/03/20/former-tennessee-teacher-on-state-takeover-plan-dont-do-it-kids-and-schools-lose/

Please help us avoid this mess in Georgia by reaching out to our state representatives TODAY and spreading the word to your friends.

THANK YOU!

Quiet time & free photo with Easter Bunny for children with autism or other disabilities, sensory issues, 3/28, Savannah Mall

March 23rd, 2015

Sensory Friendly Easter Bunny Savannah Mall

This Saturday March 28, the Caring Bunny will greet families at the lower level of Center Court in the Savannah Mall, located at 14045 Abercorn St.

With an atmosphere free from bright, flashing lights, or high-energy music, all children with different abilities are invited to meet Caring Bunny at this free event from 8-10 AM March 28 2015.

Children with autism have senses that can be oversensitive or under-developed, which affects how they experience different environments, making background noises unbearably loud or confusing. This can cause anxiety or even physical pain.

Savannah Mall’s Caring Bunny greets children in a calm environment, in an effort to make the Easter Bunny experience enjoyable for everyone. In addition, families will be given a 5 x 7 photograph from the visit and a complimentary ride on the children’s train.

March is Autistic Awareness Month. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention most recent data suggests an average of one in 110 children have an autism spectrum disorder. Autistic children’s senses can be oversensitive or under-developed, which affects how they experience different environments, making background noises unbearably loud or confusing. This can cause anxiety or even physical pain.

ILN needs exceptional artwork to liven up its new resource center and to inspire learning. They’re inviting homeschoolers ages 9-21 to enhance their portfolio and showcase their creative talents by producing art that can be hung on a wall.

Artworks should communicate the joys of homeschooling and may include field trip experiences, academic successes, and overall homeschool ideas.

Each homeschooler may submit up to two (2) artworks. Artworks may be in any medium and size, and should not be framed or mounted. Selected artworks will be on permanent display in the center and will become the property of ILN.

Recognition for the selected artworks will include three (3) gift cards each ($50, $75, $100) for primary (ages 8-10), intermediate (ages 11-13), and secondary (ages 14-21) academic levels.

See replicas of Columbus’ Niña & Pinta in Savannah, March 24-29

March 20th, 2015

Nina Pinta in beaufort, Savannah

On Tuesday, March 24, the ‘Pinta’ and the ‘Nina’, replicas of Columbus’ Ships, will open in Savannah.

The ships will be returning for their 2nd visit to River Street and docked at Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, until their departure early Monday morning March 30.

While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission charges are $8.00 for adults, $ 7.00 for seniors and $6.00 for students 5 – 16. Children 4 and under are Free. The ships are open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. No reservations necessary.

School trips

Teachers or organizations wishing to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crew member should call 1-787-672-2152 or email columfnd1492@gmail.com. Minimum of 15. $5.00 per person. No Maximum. Visit The Columbus Foundation website at www.ninapinta.org

The ‘Nina’ was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The “Pinta” was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the fifteenth century.

Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced ‘sailing museum’ for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ‘caravel’, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world.

The ships arrive on Monday, March 23 & leave the morning of March 30. Next stop: Charleston April 2-12.
