Free Skidaway Marine Science Day 2015, Skidaway Is., Savannah, Oct. 24 2015

This free campus-wide open house at The UGA Marine Extension Service & Aquarium on Skidaway Island offers activities geared for all ages. Programs, tours, displays and hands-on activities, primarily related to marine science and the coastal environment, are all part of the day’s educational fun.

Open to the public at no charge, the event is presented by the University of Georgia’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, the University of Georgia’s Marine Education Center and Aquarium, the University of Georgia’s Shellfish Research Laboratory and Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.

One of the most exciting featured attractions this year will be a close-up look at Georgia’s first oyster hatchery, a project of the UGA Marine Extension’s Shellfish Research Laboratory and Georgia Sea Grant, units of UGA Public Service and Outreach.

Other activities include tours of the 92-foot Research Vessel Savannah, fun hands-on exhibits at the UGA Aquarium, and explorations of an underwater reef at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.

Beaufort’s beloved Shark Tooth Fairy Mike Harris is teaming up with Tybee promoters to bring the first Tybee Island Kids’ Shark Tooth & Fossil Hunt to Tybee Is.’s North Beach, 10AM Sun. Oct. 18 2015.

Kids will be able to find prehistoric Mako, Bull, Sand, Great White, Snaggletooth, and coveted Megalodon sharks teeth. The “Shark Tooth Fairy” Mike Harris is donating many large Megalodon teeth and will be in attendance to help identify the sharks’ teeth found.

There will be two designated zones to search: one for kids ages 2-6, and one for kids ages 7-12. Accompanying adults are encouraged to enter the designated zone for the 2-6 year olds but not the designated zone for the 7-12 year olds. Parents can watch from outside the designated zone. If you are registering multiple kids from 2-6 and 7-12, your designated zone will be with the 7-12 year olds.

Cost: $20 per child
Ages: 2-12 (no exceptions, please))

Tickets go on sale Wed. Sept. 9 at 8AM. Details here.

Adults are prohibited from assisting kids with hunting teeth.

20,000 teeth will be planted between the two designated zones. Parents are strongly encouraged to only allow your kid to take 20 sharks teeth from the beach. They can keep searching and if they find a larger tooth, they should throw their smallest back.

SEGA SORBA (Southeast Georgia Southern Off-Road Bicycling Association) will host Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day at Whitemarsh Island Nature Preserve in Savannah Sat. Oct 3, 2015 @ 9 AM.

The event will be held in the grassy area in the middle of the park. The group will be taking kids out on the loop.

Parking is being arranged (parking arrangements are in the works, updates to come) with the Islands High School.

Participants are allowed to cross the YMCA property on their trail. This will take you to the paved trail on Whitemarsh Preserve. The two track in the middle of the preserve takes you up to the grassy area where the event will be held.

Free Savannah Children's Book Festival 2015 Forsyth Park

Live Oak Public Libraries and the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs will present the 11th annual Savannah Children’s Book Festival on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Forsyth Park.

The exciting 2015 lineup of renowned and award-winning children’s book authors and illustrators includes Newbery award-winning author Kate DiCamillo (“Flora & Ulysses” “Because of Winn Dixie”, “The Tale of Despereaux”, and more), the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.

The festival celebrates the joy of reading, the power of the written word and the magic of storytelling with award-winning children’s book authors and illustrators from around the country.

This free day-long event in Forsyth Park in Savannah brings families together to meet their favorite authors and illustrators and enjoy a variety of hands-on activities throughout the day. Rain location for the event is the Savannah Civic Center.

At 10:30 am and 2 pm, Kate DiCamillo will deliver her keynote speech, sharing how literature can impact individuals and communities: “When we read together, we connect. Together, we see the world. Together, we see one another.”

She will also participate in new events inspired by her characters, including a Ulysses Squirrel book walk, and a poster contest featuring Edward Tulane. The festival coincides with the launch of the first-ever One Book program, centering on Kate’s Flora & Ulysses.

The National Ambassador program was established in 2008 and is co-sponsored by Every Child a Reader (ECAR), the Children’s Book Council (CBC), and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

FREE Festival in the Park, amusement rides, fireworks during Patriot Weekend in Pooler

Free Pooler Festival 2015 Patriot Weekend The Festival in the Park will be at the Pooler Park off Rogers Street (900 S. Rogers Street, Pooler, Ga.) on Saturday, September 12, 2015.

The event is free and will be family friendly. Food, drinks and merchandise will be available for purchase from local vendors. Be sure to bring a blanket or lawn chairs. Parking options here.

Junior League of Savannah Thrift Sale 2015, Oct. 3

Junior League of Savannah Thrift Sale 2015 The Junior League of Savannah will host its 68th Annual Thrift Sale on Sat. Oct. 3 at the Savannah Civic Center.

This annual event draws thousands of shoppers from the across the Low Country to purchase both needed household goods and unique treasures. Merchandise includes appliances, children’s clothes and toys, holiday decorations, books, housewares, linens, sporting goods, furniture and much more. The sale also features adult women’s formal wear and business attire.

Parking is free.

Doors will be open from 7:30am until 2pm. The sale will re-open as a $10 grab bag event from 2:30-3pm for all ticket holders.

Thrift Sale admission is $5. Tickets can be purchased at the Civic Center Box Office by calling 912-651-6550 or visiting savannahcivic.com.

Preview shopping event

You’re also invited to celebrate the kickoff of the Junior League of Savannah’s Thrift Sale by attending the Preview Shopping Event on Fri., Oct. 2. The evening will begin at 5:30pm offering the first opportunity to shop for Thrift Sale merchandise and hidden gems until 7:30pm.

Tickets to Preview Shopping are available for $20 per person and can be purchased through the Civic Center Box Office or at the Door. Preview Shopping merchandise is double the marked ticket price.

The Annual Thrift Sale is Junior League of Savannah’s primary fundraising event. Money raised is invested back into the community through volunteer training and multiple Junior League projects.

Kids ages 5 and under take over the kitchen for the most creative culinary experience in town! Join us for an exciting Tiny Tots Cooking Party including cooking, learning, singing, and story time! Seats are limited and advanced tickets are required! Tickets are $15 per child and one responsible adult per child is required. Register here. 

12:30-2pm: Kids’ Cooking Party
Kids ages 6 and up can join us to make some delicious kid-friendly dishes in the TTF kitchen! Everyone gets to mix, measure, stir and dine on their culinary creations! A Century of Sentries at Old Fort Jackson, Savannah
Sept 5-7
Bring the kids to Old Fort Jackson to participate in a variety of hands-on activities appropriate for all ages to learn about the daily life of the soldiers stationed at Fort Jackson. Activities include marching, battle reenactments, heavy artillery drill, and musket and cannon demonstrations. Learn about the many individuals and units of the of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War that are part of the story of a Century of Sentries at Old Fort Jackson.

Fleet Feet Savannah’s CREW kids! training program includes running, field games and other fun activities that are perfect for releasing energy.

This program will prepare your kids for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah 1 Mile or 5K happening on Sunday November 8th, 2015.

This 8-week program will be facilitated by certified coaches who have a passion for encouraging and empowering our younger generation to live healthy, active lifestyles – and they make it fun.

Sign up your child for Youth Roller Hockey in Savannah at the outdoor Lake Mayer hockey rink.

The first practice of the new season will be Sat. Sept 12 2015 . Practices will be at 10AM Saturdays through the end of April 2016. Cost: $60, with $40 due at registration and the remainder due by Jan. 1, 2016.

The group is organized through Chatham County Parks Services and Savannah Adult Hockey. Registration packets will be available at practice Sept. 12.

For ages 5-12 years old. No experience necessary.
