Voices for Schools Savannah Due to schedule constraints, some Savannah-Chatham County Public School students miss out on a formal Sexual and Health Education Curriculum in school.

Voices For Schools in Savannah is exploring the idea of bringing in educators from an outside educational non-profit (Voices for Schools is currently working on who that will be) to provide this education outside of the school day.

Celebrate World Oceans Day on Fri. June 8 2018, 10AM-2PM at the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island.

Throughout the day, visitors can tour behind the scenes at the aquarium, encounter reptiles, interact with horseshoe crabs and learn about the incredible animals of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.

Coastal Cathedral Early Education Center in Savannah invites you to enroll your child in our summer camp for a fun, enriching and spiritual summer experience!

Children ages 4-12 (Pre-K-6th grades) will be immersed in a curriculum that is sure to stimulate learning and keep them engaged throughout the summer.

Some of the classes include dance, STEM, Lego Robotics, Drama, Culinary Arts & more.

The cost of the camp is $180/week (sibling discounts available).

Camp runs from May 21-August 3 2018.

A breakfast snack is provided each morning. Campers have the option of bringing their own lunch and afternoon snack or paying a weekly fee of $25 to have their lunch provided by the camp.

St. Andrew’s School  sophomore Eden Young won the regional National English Speaking Union’s Shakespeare Competition last month in Savannah.

Eden took on the role of Queen Katherine for her monologue from Henry VIII and also performed Sonnet 146. Since January, she has been working on the two Shakespeare pieces with SAS theatre teacher Ms. Maggie Hart. Eden now receives an all expense paid trip to the National Competition in New York City this April. A panel of judges will select the top three performances. 

The purpose of the English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition is to help young people develop critical thinking skills, improve public speaking abilities, and increase his/her self-confidence through reading, analysis, and performance of Shakespeare works.

This four-day camp is designed to help upper-elementary and middle school students improve their drawing skills and begin the process of developing a portfolio. Students will focus on measurement, proportion, perspective, and use of value to create volume and space. The camp will also include practice portraiture and sketching from clothed models.

The Drawing Portfolio Builder Camp is a great class for students to learn and advance the skills necessary for developing art portfolios.

This intensive, weeklong program focuses on black-and-white and digital photography, as well as the basic functions of 35mm manual cameras. While instructors emphasize the advancements of digital media and Adobe Photoshop, they will also cover conventional methods of film photography, including pinhole cameras, to supplement the experience.

The camp features student use of both manual and digital cameras. The program will culminate with a reception and exhibition of the participants’ work in the Jepson Center.

This comprehensive STEAM Camp gives young people the opportunity to explore the artistic potential of technology. In this weeklong camp, students will learn to use a variety of technologies and methods to create and express themselves.

Students will explore 3D printing, create images with Adobe Photoshop, and solder their own electronic-noise toys. Participants will also learn basic computer programming with Arduino microcontrollers. The program culminates with a reception and exhibition of the participants’work in the Jepson Center.

Each day, this camp will feature a different local artist providing a unique lesson based on his or her medium. Lunch in Telfair Square (weather permitting), breaks and games in ArtZeum, and special tours of the galleries are all included. Students will learn to give constructive criticism on their own and their peers’ artwork. The program culminates with a student art exhibition and a reception in the Jepson Center.

Spend the night in Georgia’s oldest brick fort and experience history firsthand!

Registration is now open for the 2018 Old Fort Jackson Family Campover, the annual event for families to experience historic programs and family fun in a 210-year-old National Historic Landmark. The event will be Fri. March 9, 5PM through Sat. March 10 at 9AM at Old Fort Jackson, 1 Fort Jackson Rd, Savannah, GA 31404.

Check-in and tent set up will begin at 4PM and dinner will be served at 6:45PM. That night, guests will participate in historic military activities, play period appropriate games, make crafts, and drill on multiple stations throughout the fort.

The next morning campers will rise, pack up their gear, enjoy a hot breakfast, and participate in the event closing ceremonies. Preregistration and prepayment are required and tickets are $65 for children ages 4 to 15 years of age. Tickets: $45 for adults 16 years of age and older. Event tickets can be purchased online here.

Deep Speaks 

The Young Author Project, Deep Center’s introductory program, engages public middle school students with language & their stories to help them express themselves with skill, confidence & courage.

Twice a year, Deep Center releases anthologies featuring original, vivid &  fearless stories, poems & plays written by Deep’s young authors—Savannah-Chatham public middle school students in Deep’s Young Author Project.

Select young authors are chosen by their peers to read their published works at Deep Speaksthe Youth Author Project’s end-of-semester book launch & live reading in front of a live audience of about 500  family members, peers & community members from all over Savannah.

Come hear these literary works.

Seating is first-come, first-served. Doors open at 6PM. The readings will start promptly at 6:30PM.

PreK Savannah Public Schools Chatham County

Free, lottery-funded Pre-K for 2018-2019 school year

This free, state-funded Pre-K at some Savannah-Chatham public schools is open to all children who are 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 2018 residing in Chatham County.

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has 61 Georgia Lottery funded Pre-K classes.  See the list of Savannah-Chatham public schools that offer the free Pre-K here.

Pre-K applications for the free, lottery-funded Pre-K programs for 2018-19 at Savannah-Chatham County public schools will be available online here Tuesday, February 20-March 6, 2018.
The 2018-2019 Lottery will run on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.

This free, state-funded Pre-K is open to all children who are 4 years old on or by Sept. 1 2018. Details here. 

Some Savannah private preschools and childcare facilities also offer the state-funded, free Pre-K program and have different application deadlines. Please contact those facilities for their application deadlines.
