SMA Angels Benefit Ball
Few stories are emotional as that of Richmond Hill twins, Cassie and Skylar Swanson, born ten years ago with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, an inherited neuromuscular disease that’s the No. 1 genetic killer of children younger than 2. Both girls lived much longer than expected and celebrated their ninth birthdays together. Cassie died last year of complications from the disease, leaving Skylar, now 10, and her family with a sadness that never ends.
The twins’ parents, David and Dana Swanson, Skylar and their loved ones haven’t given up on finding a treatment for SMA. Nov. 17 will be the 10th year of the So Many Angels Ball, a Savannah fund raiser for SMA started by family and friends of Skylar and Cassie. Proceeds benefit research for a cure or treatment for SMA.
The benefit has contributed more than $475,000 to SMA research projects. Read my article in Tuesday’s (today’s) Savannah Morning News to find out about progress in SMA research and why, out of more than 600 neurological disorders, SMA has been singled out by health experts as the disease closest to treatment.
The public’s invited to partake in the SMA Angels auction, dinner and dance at 6 pm Nov. 17. Here’s the info:
