Discounted tickets for Marsh Treks with Tybee Marine Science Center

Discount Marsh Trek Savannah Tybee Island Marine Science Center
The Tybee Island Marine Science Center will offer a half-price discount on their popular Marsh Treks.

Discounted tickets will be available starting this Sat. Sept. 1 2018 through Dec. 31 2018. The one-hour Marsh Trek, normally $10, will be available for $5 per person. Marsh Treks are offered daily at 4PM.

Participants can sign-up in person at the center or online at www.tybeemarinescience.org. The program is appropriate for all ages.

“We are excited to be working with Visit Tybee on this promotion and encouraging visitors to see more than just Tybee’s beach,” said Maria Procopio, executive director for the science center. She continued, “experiencing the marsh with a marine science educator explaining the sights, sounds, and smells is an amazing way to connect with nature whether you’re a resident or a visitor.”

The view on either side of the causeway (Highway 80) onto Tybee Island is flanked by the marsh, and the Marsh Trek provides an opportunity for hands-on exploration of this unique eco-system.

Other Tybee Island Marine Science Center programs

Cost: All Walks, Talks, & Treks are $10 per person (except for the Marsh Treks which are half off. See above), $8 for science center members. Children ages 4 & younger are FREE! Program duration: 60 minutes.

Sift ‘n’ Seine at 1PM

On the sift ‘n’ seine program, you’ll discover the marine life of the intertidal zone by pulling a 10 foot seine net through waist-deep water. Commonly caught organisms include pompanos, sea jellies, and crabs. After seining, you’ll explore the marine life of the sandy bottom by sifting various organisms from the wet sand on the beach. This program is recommended for participants ages 9 and older.

South Beach Walk at 2PM

South beach walks depart from the science center where you’ll join one of the marine science center’s knowledgeable marine science educators on a guided walk of Tybee’s south beach. Learn about the dynamics of Georgia’s barrier islands, the importance of the intertidal zone, the forces behind the waves, Tybee’s unique tidal surge, and the role that sand dunes perform in keeping Tybee protected.

Turtle Talk at 3PM

During the Turtle Talk, you’ll learn about anatomy and natural adaptations of sea turtles, discuss Tybee’s Sea Turtle Project conservation efforts, and get to meet the resident loggerhead sea turtle, Matthew. Based on program content, Turtle Talks are recommended for kids ages six and older.

Marsh Trek at 4PM (Marsh Treks are discounted from Sept. 1-Dec. 31. See above.)

On a marsh trek, you’ll enjoy a hands-on exploration of Georgia’s salt marsh, searching the mud for fiddler crabs, snails, and more. Learn about adaptations necessary for survival in this environment, how the marsh functions as a nursery for many organisms, a filter for pollutants, and as an abundant food source. Please wear closed-toed, closed-heel shoes, such as rain boots or old tennis shoes (no flip flops or Crocs) and expect to get muddy. Marsh Treks meet off-site from the science center, on the north end of the island at Spanish Hammock. Directions are provided with paid program confirmation.
