Ike the Sea Turtle now on display @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center

Ike Sea Turtle Tybee Island Science Marine CenterIke, a loggerhead sea turtle hatchling, is now on display in a 800 gallon sea turtle tank @ Tybee Island Marine Science Center.

Ike’s egg was laid in nest number 13, which began to hatch on August 23rd, but was overrun with fire ants and emergently relocated by the center’s Tybee Sea Turtle Project volunteers. On Aug. 28, a standard nest excavation was performed and 27 of Ike’s straggler siblings were helped to the ocean. Ike was selected to be this year’s Sea Turtle Ocean Ambassador and showed immediate signs of being a strong swimmer and big eater.

As Ocean Ambassador, Ike will educate students, scouts, and island visitors about sea turtle conservation and stewardship. Savannah’s local IKEA Distribution Center is sponsoring his care and keeping a close eye on his development. Ike went for his first wellness check up with Dr. Terry Norton at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Is in September and has been growing rapidly since. He’s grown from weighing under an ounce at birth to nearly six ounces at three months old. As a full grown adult loggerhead, Ike could weigh upwards of 400 pounds.

Ike will be on display in the Coastal Georgia Gallery at the Tybee Is. Marine Science Center until August 2014, at which point he’ll be released directly into the Gulf Stream in a joint effort with the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography.
